Gear Knob came flying out

Post by skregal »

The thumb knob for selecting the gear on the console shifter
came flying out yesterday. I was out of town and told
my wife it was just the cap and instructed her to glue it back in.

Well the glue didn't work, and when I came home, I found it was
more than the cap. As you can see it isn't just the cap, which
came off before, it is the entire actuator that your thumb depresses.
It does not look broke anywhere, but I don't know what holds it in place.

The picture shows the yellow contact cement I told my wife to use
because I thought it was just the cap.

Any thoughts or recommendations before I tear the console apart
and the shift lever. I don't have a FSM for this vehicle so I would
be dismantling it blind. I can't figure out what holds it in place.

Image

It does not stay in the shift lever, but you can put it in place
and press it to shift the transmission, but when you let go it
goes flying from the spring inside the lever.

Pull the boot down and there's a clip. Pry that out with a pick or something, and pull up on the shifter. It's that simple.

I'm assuming your telling me how to get the entire lever out of the
console.

Only the handle needs to come out. All it actuates is a lever. The mechanism in the handle/grip broke. You'll need to replace that.

This part on my '05 has been replaced 3 times... seems to happen if you let your thumb off the button by sliding it which allows the button to "spring back" thereby breaking the tab that holds it in.

If B&M made a shifter that was not too "dragster" looking I would replace the whole thing.

Maybe I could fabricate a metal clip out of aluminum.
I did that with my 95 console box lid because the
cheap plastic clip kept breaking. It has lasted 10 years now.

I hate to pay for something that will not actually correct
the problem long term.

It seems that its just the GXP shifters that are breaking.

Why not just replace with a black leather one (although it would have a gray button)

I do agree that it's really goofy that the GXP shifters are breaking at an increased rate. If you could find a leather one from an 04-05 SE/SLE it would have the black button but be leather.

So if you do make something to fix ur GXP shifter please make 2 a let me know how much i will owe u for it if you do... But either way, im good with the non GXP shifter also!!
