I use Meguiar's Gold Class car wash shampoo on all the vehicles I wash. If you want to clean all the old wax off, mix in a little dawn or dishwashing soap. For an over the counter wax, Meg's Gold Class is a very good wax, I've had good luck with it. However, if your paint isn't shiny, your wax won't make it much shinier. A clay bar will help remove the crap on the surface and that might help add to your shine a little.

I notice your sig says pontiac has been burning rice since 1972. Pontiac's been around since 1926, and been making performance cars since 1961, with the Super Duty Catalina's.

I do detailing as a hobby and I also agree with the Meguiar's Gold Class car wash. I use that on every car I detail.

After washing, a clay bar is a good place to move next. It will remove surface contaminants in the paint and leave it looking and feeling smoother which will also make your wax last longer.

As far as what wax to use... To be completely honest it really won't matter what wax you use. You can buy an 8 oz. tub of wax for $100 and put it on your car and it will not look any better then a $20 tub of wax. The reason for this is the swirls and scratches that are in your paint. If you really want that *WOW* factor, you need a good detail job to remove the swirls, hazing, scratches, etc. in the paint.

If you don't want to drop the money on a professional detail job (expect to pay about $200+ for a GOOD QUALITY polishing job) then I would just stick with the Meguiar's Gold Class wax in paste or liquid form as there really is no wax that will make it look any better.

Another alternative if you just want it to look a little nicer but not fork out the cash for a professional detail job is the Mothers three step system which uses a combination of products that are used by hand to make the paint look good. It will be a lot of work, but the results will likely look better then just a wash, clay, and wax alone.

Ryan is right on the money.

If you really want a wow factor save up the money and purchase a decent polisher, pads and polish. You will be hooked after your first detail.

I purchased a Gariots Garage polisher this summer during a one day super deal at Autogeek. It has replaced my older Porter Cable. I would strongly recommend waiting for a deal on the GG Polisher.
