Amp problems

Post by 01bonne »

I'm usually pretty good about figuring out problems with my stereo, but this one has me stumped. If I turn the volume up past half on my radio my amp goes into protect. I had the sub checked at a local audio store and it was fine. If I disconnect the sub I can turn everything all the way up with no problems. I checked all my wires and they are good and nothing was touching. So I have no clue whats wrong. Its a mono block amp and I did recently turn the gain up to about 1/3 of the way. T.I.A for any suggestions or insight

I have seen a head unit do that before and that was due to the rear 6x9's arcing at the speaker terminals. I would take your subs out of your box and make sure all your ends are secured and not touching.

Sometimes amps have two fuse positions, I assume they would check this too, but check to see if it has one or two and make sure they are both have a fuse in them. Are your power and ground connections good from the battery??

What would have been good is if they tested another amp in yours' location.

I just went out and checked both fuses and they are not blown. All the connections are good from what I can tell but I'm no expert. I'm going to have a friend hook his amp up later to see if his does the same thing.

*EDIT*
I had my friend install his amp and it worked great so I'm pretty sure my amp has gone bad. Not sure why but oh well.

when you had your friend do is thing with the amp. did he take it out of his car and put it in yours?

well before you go and spend a couple hundred on a new amp. pull the cover and see if an Capacitors are blown.

or first you should try is the other way around with your friend. take your amp and put it in his car. and see what happens.

He said he had his friend "install" his amp, so I would assume that meant in his car. You may want to double check like Jay said, try both ways.

I was going to do this after we intalled my amp in my friends setup if I still was having problems, and out of nowhere it worked like a charm. It worked so well it actually fried both of his 12's. So my problem is solved, at least for now.

Sounds like you fixed one problem and created another.

No at all. I actually had the same 12's he had in his Firebird in my room from one of my previous setups so it only cost me $7.00 in gas

It sounds like you were clipping the amp. I'm assuming that your HU has higher voltage pre-outs then your friends HU. Thats why you didn't have problems in his car and you had problems in yours.

If not that I'd check voltage at the amp while turning it up. Most amps will go into protection if it drops below a certain voltage.
