My Car, an American Flag, and a BIG Gun

Post by 00Beast »

So Friday I got new tires (Yokohama Avid ENVigor 235/55R17 99H) at Discount Tire in Mankato, and washed it. So since this evening was so beautiful (75° and partly cloudy) I decided to go to our picnic area along the MN river valley and take some pictures. I found a perfect spot next to our overlook deck with its American Flag.

First the tires, and the new e-bay chrome lugnuts:

So the big gun:

Is a genuine WWI German Howitzer. My grandpa is a member of the American Legion and VFW, and they had this gun which had sat at Fort Ridgely, the local state park/1800's military fort until they deemed it an insurance hazard, then sat in the grove of a VFW member until they had the idea to put it on my grandpa's hill. It weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 tons, and it took an implement truck (basically a big rollback) to get it out there. They have it sitting on blank cement gravemarkers that my grandpa got for free from the local headstone place so it doesn't sink in. The ultimate plan is to get a new set of wheels made and donate it to a museum or something like that. It is a big topic at events out there, lol.
Bye Bye:

I love the center caps Ed! Glad I sold them to ya
Too bad I couldn't get them to work as a center to my center caps, lol?

Anyhow, those are some great shots too. I love the setting! And cool story too.

Yeah, Booze, the chrome caps finish the all chrome theme of the wheels perfectly. :beerchug:

I recognise that river valley, lol. Car looks great! As for the gun, you guys should keep it and fire it off every year on the 4th of July (blanks of course). :)

I'm interested to hear how these tires hold up. I believe these are the replacement for the Avid V4S/W4S (you can tell by the tread pattern), which I've now had on a couple of cars, and with the exception of one pair, really enjoyed for their balance of grip, quietness, ride quality, and longevity at the price they were (dirt cheap compared to other comprable tires).

LOL, I wish, but the gun has no chamber, and I doubt we could get any kind of round for it if we tried.

Cannon fuse, gun powder and some wadding. Don't need an actual shell/round.

No chamber on the back though. I'm sure the neighbors would hate us, too.

Nice. Made me want to play The Star Spangled Banner.

Need to get a few privates out there with some sandpaper and steel wool, scrub out that rust on the gun.

The gun is a 15cm Field Howitzer FH17, although it has a longer barrel than the example in my guide, and the shrapnel shield appears to have had the top half replaced.

Yeah, but 245's are too wide for winter, and expensive, and 225's would be a downgrade, lol.

I have the V4S tires on my car and they've held up very well for 2+ years now. I do regular rotations, but the only thing I'd say is to make sure your alignment is dialed in. I'm getting some excessive wear on the outer edge of my left front tire only, and I'm of the opinion that wear is entirely because of a slight alignment problem that I'll have to get taken care of.
