Picked this up today for $1400. It has a crack in the tranny around the bell housing. I had never heard of that kind of failure before, but my dad has. He said the front mount gets so bad that the case can't handle all the banging around and it fails. The weird part is that the actual failure of the trans happened while cruising, not accelerating. I'm guessing the crack was there for a while, and was slowly getting bigger, and finally got to the point to make the flexplate fail. When I try to start it, the flywheel turns, but the engine does not. It must have broke off around the bolts (like my van did)

I pulled the tranny back together to see if I could get the flywheel to engage, but it wouldn’t

Well, I guess I should get a tranny up there. We can throw it in and test it out.

Gonna use the trans out of the silver car or did you sell that already?

That car makes me sad, as it reminds me of the last black 2k you worked on, mine, lol.

Oh, I can't wait to see how this one turns out!

That's a pretty severe crack. Surely there would be some type of warning before it would get this bad? Why wouldn't the previous owner have addressed this before it came to that!

Wow,

I'm not sure. I have to believe her when she said she wasn't driving like a banshee. Once the flexplate fails, game over.
spidey3479 wrote:What are the plans, stock or   =P~ =P~ ?
Its a flip if you didn't figure that out yet... so she'll stay stock.

LMK if you want a hand -Cameron is taking off either today or Monday for Washington for 10 days so there won't be much wrenching going on in his garage in that time except me finishing hooking the wiring harness up in the 97 SSEi and bolting in the new AC compressor, starter and bolting the flywheel to the torque convertor. Should have some free time to head up north if you want a hand.
Just give me a call.

P.S. -that crack really does look nasty!!

You gonna tackle the bubbles yourself or send it to someone after its running? I'd like to see that, cuz I got a few of them myself. I'm guessing just sand it down to the metal about an inch or two outside the affected area, prime and paint, but I'd rather see what your progress is before I attempt it. If you can't do it or won't, then I certainly am not going to try.

The 2000 fuel door area rust bubbles are caused by GM using a water-holding foam to hold two body panels together. The foam holds the water and it rusts from he inside out, so basically if you could see the other side of the panel, it would be rust covered. There is no easy fix for the bubbles, other than replacing the rear quarter panel. I will not be touching it.

The hood bubbles are due to a problem with the primer used on the aluminum hood. A repaint of the hood with the proper primer/paint will take care of it...

 Even more encouragement to take better pictures and more detail writeups, thanks!

I just ordered a used tranny from a junk yard in West Virginia. Seems kinda weird that the best deal is that far away, but $500 shipped for an exact match tranny with only 98k was a lot better deal than anything I could find locally. And I dont need to return my core. He said to expect it as early as Friday, but I'm guessing it will show up on Monday. I'll probably be putting it in immediately upon arrival.
