Volt Light On

So I think my original alternator went bad on me. So I put the one in that the guy gave me when I bought the car, he said it was for the car, just bigger. Now that its in the voltage light won't go off, it idles really fast when started, and the lights continuously flicker. It shows has about 14.08 volts on the multimeter while running. What could be the issue? Wrong alternator for the car? Also the positive cable on both of the alternators gets extremely hot. It melted the rubber on the old one.

14v when running sounds good. check to make sure you plugged in the cable to the alternator, not just the positive battery cable

its plugged in. could it just be the wrong alternation and the pins arn't lining up? And if that plug happens to be bad is that a complete wiring harness changeout?

I would throw another alternator in. That doesn't sound good at all.

just make sure it's plugged in correctly and tightly.

the alt wouldnt put out power unless the PCM triggered it to, so the cable has to be in somewhat. it sounds like the PCM wire (and the dash wire) keep disconnecting and reconnecting to the alternator, possibly because the plug is loose.

Well I took the alternator that was orginally in it to advance auto parts and had it test it was fine. So I'm guessing that I was just leaving something on somewhere. I don't know... It seems to work fine now.

Is the light still on? and did they have to remove it to test?

No the light isn't still on. And no I took the alternator in the store off the car. Everything is working great now.
