Amp+Sub install on a 2000 SSEi

Amp+Sub install on a 2000 SSEi

Post by psburtis »

So, my brother has a 2000 SSEi and my 21st birthday present to him was 2 Alpine Type R's and an amp. I installed my own deck, amp, and subs in my 96 SE with no problem, but i need some help cuz his battery is in the back, obviously.

so, my main questions are: where EXACTLY is the battery? what is the easiest way to get to it? and does anyone (who has done this already) have any tips or things to watch out for that will make this install go as smoothly as possible?

he is keeping his stock stereo, but i know how to hook the amp up to that, so that's no problem. i just want some helpful hints and tips to make this go as quickly as possible. thanks!

The battery is under the back seat. Simple to get to, just pull up on the bottom front of the seat. You'll see it once you pull the seat up and out.

Beyond that, someone else will have to chime in with any other tips for you as I have no experience with audio stuff.

How are you getting signal to the amp?

The reason I ask is because the bose amp filters each pair of speakers seperatly and none of them offer full range the rears are filtered like a sub but I do not know it will sound

thanks whitearrow, thats kinda what i was assuming. just wanted to make sure.

good point swampthing, i wasn't aware. i was going to simply splice an rc converter into the back wires (like i did for my hyundai a few years ago) but if the bose amp sends different signals to each speaker there may be a problem. good thing i'm finding this out now!

anyone done this yet? install amp/subs while keeping the stock HU?

I have subs in my 2000 with the stock radio. You can splice into the rear speakers before the Bose Amp and it works good.

I have spliced into it just before the amp, and then ran that signal through a converter and then to the amp.

The Bose amp is mounted in the trunk on the rear seat back behind the black plastic cover. If you take that cover out you can get access to the wires. There is also a wire that you can use for your amp turn on signal. It is actually a pretty easy install since you don't have to run any wires to the dash or engine bay. Everything you need in either in the trunk or under the rear seat.

I'll try to find the wires colors from previous posts, otherwise I can look in my FSM.

EDIT: Found them

Does anyone know if that will be the same wiring for the Monsoon amp?

I've never dealt with a Monsoon amp, someone with a 03 FSM should be able to tell you.

The pinouts are quite different, but they use the same connectors.

viper: it seems that someone had a small amp in the trunk before, because after looking closer, i found that the wires had already been spliced and a lead to a small amp connector was there. a few questions now:

1) which wire do i tap into for the amp turn on switch?

2) do you (or anyone else) know what the correct way to connect the wires to a Scosche FAI-3A converter? i've looked online for some diagrams, but they are all pretty vague.

thanks for the help!

spent a few hours working on this project, didn't get it to work. the amp is powered and working and all, but the signal isn't getting to the amp. i tried as many different combinations with the wires between the splice and converter, and the converter and the amp.

any help at all would be greatly appreciated. if you want pics to see if you can help, let me know and i'll get them up as soon as possible. thanks for any help!

I just bought a bonneville SSEi and i love both the stock head unit and the stock radio but in my last car i had 2 12" subs and of course i needed subs in this car.
I have never installed an amp or subs in a car and im only 19 with no electrical experience before and I tackled this car in about 2 hours.
Ill give you the steps i did:
1) i bought 2 rockford 12" subs, an amp kit, a kicker amp, and a converter box (very important) LINE OUT
2) Detached negative from battery
3) Attached power cord to batery and grounded the system on a screw in the trunk
NOW THE TRICKY PART
4) With the line out converter you need to take both the cord from the left speaker and both the cords from the right speaker, splice them, and attach to the converter.
5) Removed the tape from the cords heading from the stock (black) amp and spliced the PINK wire (this is the remote cord for the amp)

This is a very easy process but you need to be precise. It took a few tries but the system sounds great! The stock radio actually pumps alot of bass to the subs witch is hard to dind in a stock radio

i already tried splicing the left rear speaker in the line out converter, and i didn't get any sound from either sub. could i possibly have a bad converter? it worked last time i used it, so i can't imagine anything would have happened to it...

Line out converters are like 7 bucks from sonic electronix. I would just find another one to try.

Since its a Bose system, I am going to have someone who has a lot more experience with installing than me. i'll know what the problem is by early next week. otherwise, i'll get a new line out converter.
