Higher output Alt.
Does anyone have any ideas for a higher output alternator without buying like an aftermarket 200+ amp competition alternator? I have a 105 amp one stock with the zzp stage 1 booster. I have 2 optima's and a 1.5 farad capacitor (yeah i know its way too small but i got it a few years ago w/ a different setup and held on to it). I've got to feed a JL Audio 1000/1 wired @ 4 ohms. Driving 2 12" JL Audio w6v2's. I have extra runs of 4 gauge going from the alt to the fuse center, there to the battery and the battery ground in addition to the factory wire. It's a lot of work for my poor alternator and I know it's gonna be giving up soon.

Re: Higher output Alt.
Real quick question....
Do you really need two optimas to push a 1000 watt amp? my friend's got a 1800 watt kenwood amp wired at 1 ohm and no extra batteries or alts. maybe a cap, that's it.
Also, save space, and money. Do a big three upgrade.
Big three is upgrading the three main power and ground wires. (USE 1/0 GAUGE WIRE!!)
-Batt to Alt
-Batt to Body ground
-Batt to Motor block ground
click http://www.knukonceptz.com/productDetai ... dID=KLMX0R
KNU is a newer brand, VERY good wire.
As far as i'm concerned, all you should need is One optima under the hood, and MAYBE a 3 farad cap next to your amp. going from the Optima under the hood, into the cap, out to the amp.
*EDIT*
you SHOULD NOT have to add extra wires from your battery to your fuse center in your car. the fuse center has nothing to do with adding subwoofers to your car. Subwoofers, amps, are all just extra necessities.
In my eyes, like i said, all you should need is a big three upgrade, and a bigger cap.

Wren and I have both gotten our alternators from here with very good results...

I had them both already from a different setup, did the big 3, i also did to the fuse center because that's where the alt runs to.
Thanks for the alt link! Looks very promising, bolt right in or does anything need to be tweaked?

Bolts right in, you are going to want to talk to them...they did make one mistake on me but made good on it very fast, the first one they sent me was for a series I, 2 bolt pattern...obviously mine is a 3 bolt being series II. Call them up and tell them what you want, then they'll tell you how to order and what to write in on the order if anything special.
*Oh and, with my 14v mod, this is the only alternator I've had that's for a long consistent time (and to this date) idles and runs at literally the same 14v+ almost no matter what is on. It certainly must be putting out some decent amperage even at idle...and that's a very big plus.

I agree, that's WAY overkill for your setup. I do have a 160-amp alternator as well from www.mralternator.com .
I got it back in 2004 or so in a small group buy from the old forum long before we moved here. It's been a great unit all along. The one I have is a modified 140-amp delco unit with a smaller pulley, but tweaked back to provide the correct voltage but more current. You MAY want to increase the size of one of your idler pulleys to 3.25" to make up for the smaller alternator pulley and maintain proper belt tension.

Re: Higher output Alt.
I'm thinking maybe sell an optima to help pay for an alternator? So do these alternators come with an overdriven pulley on them or did you drop the pulley size yourself?

Re: Higher output Alt.
very good idea. if its a good optima, you could easily get maybe $90 for it i'd say. (considering a NEW red top goes for $160)98Park wrote:I'm thinking maybe sell an optima to help pay for an alternator? The unit will come with the overdrive pulley installed.

Another thing to ponder, the Police Impalas had a higher output alt

Re: Higher output Alt.
It showed up as a 125 Amp for the 9C1 but they were $200, for another $10 you can get a 160 that's probably better quality than a parts store reman
