L67 rebuild ... sort of......NO 56K!

Post by 1fatcat »

I am rebuilding an L67 and thought you guys might like to see the project. It is not a full blown rebuild, but pretty much all the same steps will be taken...just not all the same parts replaced as a full blown rebuild would be. Please be patient, I will try to finish this fast, but expect some delays.

Just picked up the engine block and heads from the machine shop today, I had them cook the block and heads just to get them a little cleaner to work with. They will still need a final washing.

After cooking.

New cam bearings installed (by machine shop cuz the tool is $250)

Light shining through one of the oil gallery holes, use a gun cleaning kit to scrub these holes before final rinse/cleaning.Image

That is all for tonight. I need some beauty sleep...badly!!!

Block cleaned w/final rinse. Checking bearing clearance
Image
Crank in place. Remember, no oil should be used when checking bearing clearance. And don't rotate the crank either.
Image
Checking crank end play
Image
Crank end play can be checked on the thrust bearing too with a feeler gauge
Image
Plastigage compressed
Image
Image
Torquing mains to 30ft lbs
Image
And now an additional 110* rotation
Image
Main cap side bolts, use a sealer here to keep oil in
Image
And torque to spec. 11 ft lbs and 45* rotation
Image
Rod bearings are getting replaced
Image
Measuring piston clearance
Image
New rod bearings installed
Image
Installing pistons
Image
Measuring rod bearing clearance with plastigage
Image
Image
Lube up the bearings with assembly lube
Image
Cover the engine when your done for the night
Image
So thats it for tonight, just got the crank and one piston it, oh, and the cam. I don't get much spare time for my projects. :(

That measuring is critically important, but takes forever....

Just the stock cam. I didn't want the added strain on the valve train or the extra expense of upgrading it all. Sorry, I know this is where it gets boring. :(

Finally got some time today, here is the latest progress.
In the first pic, if you look close, the last connecting rod has an arrow facing the wrong way. That was a mistake in the magic marker, not the assembly. I marked it wrong, but it is installed correctly.

Rear cover installed

Very nice!

Just a little sidenote, don't know if it applies for the L67, but in L36 application, FelPro puts out a new revised pan gasket that calls for only small dots of sealant at each of the four corners, it says specifically not to use sealant on the entire gasket, although that used to have to be the case but the revised design fixes that. It will say that in the instructions and also when looking up the part, they'll be a second part number or "revised part" marking.

I was thinking the same thing..."OMG, He painted it White!!"

Just out of curiosity, what kind of paint did you use? If it is an automotive urethane with a couple of clears on it, it might last for a while and clean easily, though it will change color around the heads.

I'd imagine that a mid engine car can keep the engine a lot cleaner than a front engine. Plus, a full-rebuild means no leaking gaskets to worry about. I bet it will look great even years from now.

After 3 years the Grizz engine I rebuilt is still leak free and as clean as when I lowered it in.

The only leaks are from the trani shaft seals. About 2 tablespoons every time it gets shut down. :angry7:
