Towing a trailer?

Post by 92BonnevilleSE »

I was just wondering if anyone has towed a trailer with a weight of almost 850lbs on it? I'm looking to be hauling a trailer with both of my bikes on it to Tennessee and back. Just wondering if the Bonne could handle it or should I look for somethine else?

Should be fine, as long as the hitch is properly attached and you have the appropriate lights. 850 lbs is a car full of guys and crap in the trunk, but pulls easier behind the car. Just make sure the weight is distributed on the tongue properly.

I didn't think it would be a problem. I snagged a hitch off a 98 Bonne at the JY for $60 and it appeares to be in great condition. Now to just find a trailer to use.

850 is nothing Joe. You might even forget it is even there after the initial anxiety wears off. I don't know if U-Haul has them all over the country, but the local ones here always seem to have "Garden Tractor Trailers"... meant for hauling riding lawn mowers and such, they are perfect for hauling motorcycles around.

I've towed (short local trips) over 2000 pounds on a couple occasions with my rather large (but surprisingly light empty weight) home-built trailer. With both cars through the years.

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2858&hilit=trailer

(note the load of gravel which is already half emptied)

It's all about proper load distribution in the trailer.

Should also be noted, since we are on the subject of towing, that any towing beyond what is outlined in the original post, would also benefit from a transmission cooler to keep the transmission happy.

Thanks for the input guys. I was really hoping that it would be able to tow it no problem. I'm planning on going to Tennessee with my brother for spring break next week and taking the bikes. Going to ride the Dragons Tail which consists of 318 curves in 11miles.. Would be a fun ride and a fun way to enjoy Spring Break with my bro

Add a decent size Tranny cooler, and like it was said make sure the weight is distributed properly.... You should be fine..

Yeah, I believe our cars are rated to tow 1000-2000 lbs with a proper hitch so 850 should be just fine, probably won't even break a sweat.

The Dragon's tail is definitely awesome, I've ridden it as a passenger before when I was a lot younger but never driven it. It's on my list of things to do one day.

I wouldn't doubt it. I'm taking a 2008 Suzuki gsxr 1000 and a 98 Honda cbr 900rr down there. My oldest bro lives near Knoxville, Tennessee and he says he took his Harley through there and could hardly walk

It is...the first couple of times anyways... After doing the dragon a few times, I stick to the Blue Ridge, Great Smokey, Foothills, and Cherohala...all the milder roads where you are not constantly changing gears and doing hairpins. More time to enjoy the view. The dragon is more like work than play. Campground on the N.C. side is a great place to hang out though, even if you are doing the roads around the area instead of Deal's Gap itself.

Man, that looks fun. I'd love to take a bike or a nice handling car (Corvette, VW GTI [lol], etc) through there.

Yeah a nice handling car would be awesome to take through it. I plan on stopping at my moms house about 1 hour away and drive the bikes to the dragon or else I'd take the bonne through it for the hell of it. Lol
