First ever accident..

Post by bonnevillain »

Happened about 9:45 downtown Minneapolis.. I was at a red light behind an airport taxi (Minivan) and the light turned green. He started to accelerate, and so did I. Then I glanced down at my directions and when I looked back up he had stopped again. I think someone in front of him was trying to turn. I hit the brakes and tapped him going like 5mph. No damage at all to the Bonneville, but his fender cover was cracked. I offered to pay him, but since it was a work vehicle he said he has to report it.. can't blame him there. I gave him my info, i'm still holding out hope nothing will come of it. No cops though thankfully.

Pisses me off mostly cause it was so minor, and if my insurance goes up because of that stupid mistake i will be in bad shape.

That exact situation has happened to be before. I slid to a stop last week when I looked down real quick and the person in front of me had stopped at a green light.

Same thing happened to me before. On the bright side, many insurers will not raise your rates as long as there was not a ticket and repairs are under $6-800. At least thats how American Family Ins. worked for me.

yeah my guard was really down. When the guy in front of you is accelerating, you really don't expect to have to hit the brakes fast. ugh.

I've had a few close calls like that. Had one just a few weeks ago actually, had to panic stop from 25 mph cause the guy stopped suddenly for no apparent reason just down the road from taking off at a red light, and I happened to be looking at the radio changing the station. Tires squealed, my truck was all like WHAT ARE YOU DOING and of course there were pedestrians right there on the sidewalk and they were all yelling OH MY GOD and screaming but fortunately I didn't hit the guy. Can't really blame you there, seems to happen to everybody at some point.

Had the same thing happen to me last month, except I was on the other side of the equation. The guy left a license plate dimple in my rear bumper, but I wasn't going to waste my time dragging through the whole process.

Don't know if your insurance is the same as mine, but i backed into a friends car with my blazer, and my insurance company said as long as the repairs weren't over $1000 my rates wouldn't go up. Luckily i found a good body shop that fixed it for $980. So my rates were fine.

Well I haven't heard from the insurance company yet.. I'm assuming they'd call me to confirm if the guy reported it. I may have gotten lucky.
EDIT: No suck luck.. insurance will go up $200 every 6 months if it goes on my record. I can also pay for the damages out of pocked to avoid that.. waiting to hear an estimate
