94 ignition coils

Post by DaBlackPearl »

OK, I got OEM original ignition coils at 205,000+ miles.
They have been cutting ou in foggy weather and under heavy load.
My question is should I get some Accell coils or get some OEM's?
BTW, does anyone have part numbers for both?

Thanks
~Rich
Thanks, Rich :)

OEM's are more reliable, and cost the same. MSD's as well, and are a bit hotter than stock.

I've got a set of the Accels. They cause really really bad high RPM preignition. Like, so bad the PCM goes right past KR and goes into LIMP mode. I tested the resistance, and they came out fine.

Find a newer L67/L32 and look for the Blue on the bottom...

Ok NAPA has 2 aftermarket brands and then the delphi that are supposed to be the OEM.
Should I just go with the OEM?
Is there a different part number for Series 1 and Series 2?
Thanks, Rich :)

why buy new? I have several sets of the newer coils, I could just throw them in with your other stuff. $10/each.

FYI, all L67/L32 coils from 97 and newer are 'hotter' than Series 1 or L36 coils of any year.

Just look for the blue tabs on the bottom, and you're good. Andrew saves another......

When I upgraded the Zilla, I noticed a slight improvement at idle, and the most obvious improvement accellerating through the midrange with half throttle.

Killer update! Since I have owned this car gas mileage has been a consideration cuz I drive alot! I also drive heavy on the petal. On average, when I got the car Bone stock at 150,000 miles I did a tune up and changed the o2 sensor. Gas mileage averaged 18mpg. Then I did the mods to the intake, the exhaust, the rockers, and dropped the pulley to a 2.5" and gas mileage jumped to 22mpg around town and 30mpg on a long hwy drive.

This is only my first tank since I added these coils, and replaced the fouled plugs and gas mileage on this tank is 25mpg! I actually got 375 miles on the trip OD on 15g fuel. WOW!
Thanks, Rich :)

Ok so i have a 1992 se and it runs rough with low horse power. I haven't worked on these cars much but it seems to make sense the coil pack could cause this.
no check engine light so i am assuming no codes stored.
your post seems to imply other newer coils would be better from a salvage yard for your 94. would this also be correct for this 92??
and what should i buy from what year and what engone?

Does your 92 have the coils with the posts all on one side or three on each side?

Re: 94 ignition coils

they already look like these ones so i believe these are delco ones
Image
but if these are mis-firing would this still not cause poor running issues but not cause the check engine light to come on?
do these go bad often or is it sometimes the ignition module itself?
and is there another way to test these, i really don't want to start throwing parts into this and not solve the issue

You're easy then. Just replace all 3 coils with the 97 and newer L67/L32 coils. The insulators on the bottom should be blue, not gray (like yours very likely) or yellow.

These were yellow, the salvage yard only had 2 vehicles that were 97 or newer, a 97 and a 98 that still had these parts in them.
I removed them both and nether were yellow or blue, I took the ones from the 98 grand prix with the 3.8L, I also took the ignition module with them so it looked like one assy, $25.00 later and the car runs great.
Thanks guys I really appreciate the help.
