Vin Question
Well I was working on my L67 swap and we got to thinking that the VIN would be on the block or Transmission somewhere, and then I could just get a carfax for it and have an idea of the life my motor lead. Well the only thing is that only I think the last 9 or so are on the block. My dad seems to think that we could use the first half of a VIN from a another PA ultra from 98 because those should all be the same. I am not sure about this but figured I would ask.
What do you guys think?

Re: Vin Question
well here is how it breaks down by each digit
1: nation, so 1
2:manufacture, so g for gm
3: divison in manufacturer.....
4:then weight.power
5:platform
6:model/special code
7:body type
8:Engine
9:
10:year
11:plant code
12-17 is production sequence
so by looking at that, yes, since everything else woudl be the same IMO

Re: Vin Question
I don't think the VIN is on the engine. That's the stamping number for the block more than likely.

Re: Vin Question
I agree, I don't think you'll find the VIN on the engine.

Re: Vin Question
You should be able to find one on ebay with a VIN. Are the last nine digits stamped into the block?

Note #3
The table below will help you locate your car's unique DNA - its unique vehicle identification number. VINs are normally located in several locations on a car, but the most common places are:
- On the door frame/door post of the front doors (usually driver's but sometimes passenger's)
- On the dash near the windshield
- On the engine itself (machined pad on front of engine)
- On the car's firewall
- In the left-hand inner wheel arch
- On the steering wheel/steering column
- On the radiator support bracket
- On your car's title, registration, guarantee/maintenance book or on the declarations page of your auto insurance policy

Re: Vin Question
Yep it is 1G4CU521, found that out last night, BUT I looked at the machine pad on the trans and typed it in and got nothing. Cant find anything on motor either. Might have a replaced trans? Dunno. If I could find something on the engine it would help alot.

Re: Vin Question
You know its funny... Out of all the 3800's I have tinkered with I have never seen a Vin Plate on any of them.. Or the trans for that matter, just the hydramatic Tag...

Re: Vin Question
I've never seen one either. I still think the number you found was a stamping number. Post it and let us see.

Re: Vin Question
taking off the LIM will give you way better idea of how the engine was run compared to a VIN.

Re: Vin Question
True and I will be doing that but, I figure if I could get a carfax, I would know miles, and some maintenance, etc, etc. Just an added piece of mind.
