Front axle hub change on 2000 Bonneville.

Post by PontiacPrincess »

I've encountered a problem and am not sure what is causing it. I got the axle hub swapped out and everything put back together but now the brake indicator light on my dash will not go off. The parking brake is not set. I took the calipers back off to make sure the pad didn't get cocked or something, it looked fine. The caliper piston isn't stuck and there isn't any fluid leaking.

What is the plug on the hub for? Is it possible whatever that plug does is faulty and causing the light to be on?

Thanks for any help!

hey Princess!

Have you checked the brake fluid level?

The plug on the hub is for the wheel speed sensor. Even if that sensor is bad or disconnected, it wouldn't throw your brake light, it would show a ABS/TC light.

Yes, I checked the brake fluid level to make sure it wasn't low, LOL.

It's wierd, I had a pain getting the axle shaft nut off to change the hub and now this.

Guess I'll see if it's still on in the AM and go from there. Getting dark here, which means cold and I don't work so good in the cold. I wish my garage was heated...

Only real way to tell is to have it scanned and see why the brake light is on. Either a dealer, or an independent shop with the proper scanner.

You know, I changed the right rear hub yesterday. I think I will pull the rear caliper off and check it.

Even though the parking brake appears to be off, double check the pedal to make sure that is retracted all the way. You could try lifting it with your foot. The return spring for the pedal is pretty weak, and relies a great deal on the cabling for the parking brake. If that has stretched, the pedal may not return all the way.
