Re: Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum
yeah, the price is good, and nothing but rave reviews from customers. I had the KH16 series on my '03 Impala and liked those very much as well.
Don't want to spent to X-mas money on them, but I'm afraid its time.
Nice to hear from you Ed.

The reviews I saw at Tire Rack were mostly positive. Some concerns about noise but the tread wear was excellent.

Re: Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum
I've heard some very bad things about them in the wet. Personally...I rate any tire strictly by its wet performance, and then everything else.
If you want a recommendation...you're running 18" wheels right?
I'd go to a 245/45R18, and get some Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires...I've sold a couple sets to people going up north, as well as people driving around in the Florida wet conditions, and so far, on their returns for rotations, I'm getting excellent reviews on them.
I've only gotten better reviews on the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus...but then again, I partially attribute that to the fact that those customers paid generally well in the 200s per tire, and I don't think those last as long as the Continentals do.

Thanks Ed.
Recommendation stays the same for the tire though. 235/55R17, or 245/50R17, either way.

Re: Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum
I'd go with 235/55's. More sidewall for better ride, and narrower tread helps with traction in snow and on ice.

The sidewall...would stay very much the same...
...but yes, narrower width would help with the snow/slush/ice.
235/55 is my vote in that context as well.

Re: Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum
We have those tires on Cindys car and we have put a little over 10k on them. I like them in the wet and we get good traction when its wet outside. We also get better mileage with these tires than we did with the BFG 255/50-17. I like the stiffer sidewall that this tire has and the extra load they can handle. We drive in very hot temp's(105+) with heavy loads for hours at a time(some of our day rides are 750 miles) at 80+ mph and the tires take the heat and speed with ease.
I have no idea how they work in the snow, we don't get any in the valley and we take the truck to the mountains when its snowing.
ROD
p.s. we run 45 psi in the front and 40 in the rear

Re: Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum
fellas, thanks for the input. I think based on the rave reviews (and yours), it's worth spending $30 more a tire on these. One question though, all the negative reviews on these tires from TR seem to be coming from people who drive the small import ricers (Subaru WRX, Honda Civic, etc), just can't figure out why?

Re: Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum
Maybe the weight of the car has something to do with it ?
The Bonneville with Cindy and I plus all the crap Cindy keeps in the trunk weighs about 4500 lbs
with that much weight you need the stiffer sidewall that these tires have so the tires don't flex
to much in the corners.

Re: Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum
I run the Kumho Ecsta ASX (similar tire) on the SLEeper. I wanted a tire that would still perform in the winter, but wouldn't give up traction during race season.
It's a great all-around tire for a car the size of ours. I have no road noise, but a friend at work put them on her HHR and got some (not a lot) road noise. I think the tire is really suited for a larger vehicle like ours.

Re: Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum
Follow-up due to a PM nudge, the tires are great in wet (imagine that in Oregon) snow, and even ice. Better than any tires I've had on either car for all-season. That's the Ecsta ASX though, and I don't know how that other tire compares.
Keep in mind that I also went wider when I got these tires, so I have a bigger contact patch than I was previously used to.

Last year we put a set of the Pirelli P Zero Nero on the 2k and they run really well. They are real good on wet roads too. Can't say about snow because it stays in the garage then. They have good feedback also on a few other sites.
