Now what! Tranny noise?

We just got done putting the engine back together after replacing the head gaskets. Anyone know what's causing this noise? It does it even if the engine isn't running & you push the car.

Sounds like someone put baseball cards in your spokes!

Definately sounds tranny/axle related. Can you put it up on stands and then spin the tires to locate the noise?

Sounds like an issue with the parking prawl not fully disengaging... Get it off the ground and see if you can find the area of the noise..

I agree with Jrs3800. The noise intervals are too fast for an axle or bearing. It does seem to be the right speed-to-noise ratio for a parking pawl hanging up.

You are getting a click about every 10 degrees of wheel rotation in both directions, which is about right for the parking pawl. I would also check for anything in both wheel wells (like a spash shield hanging down and touching a moving part of the axles/tires.)

When you were working on the 2-4-6 cylinder head, you were right over the shift bellcrank on the top of the transmission, check for damage and the cable adjustment. Though, putting the transmission in drive should pull the pawl away more than enough to keep it from riding the parking gear.

Also check the length of the top of the transmission case leading to the diff cover for damage (the rod that operates the parking pawl is just inside the top of the case.)

Last, check the guide that supports the end of the parking pawl rod. It's that bore right above where the diff cover mates to the body of the transmission.. you'll see a little tang sticking out the bore. Grab it with a pair of pliers and wiggle it (the guide bushing you are grabbing ahold of is sealed with an O-ring and held in place with a roll pin.)

We jacked it up but can't really tell where the noise is coming from except to say it's in the middle of the tranny. So we dropped the pan & found enough metal to safely call this one toast. Two transmisions in about 3 months. :roll:
