I bet I could use some parts off that!

-But yeah, the *new* car you have to buy under cash for clunkers has to get at least 22 mpg, and I regularly get that in my 12-year-old SE. No way it would qualify as the *clunker*!

I wonder if it's to late to scavenge parts off the car. Doesn't the law say when once you thow something in the garbage that you have no longer have any rights to it? It's a free for all on for our parts bin!

As the law goes, the engine and driveline MUST be destroyed. There are no exceptions there. But the rest of the car (body panels, glass, interior, trim, etc) is allowed to be salvaged and parted out for resale. I have yet to find one dealer trying to do this. They all just want to get rid of the car and get their cash from the govt. And because the govt. has been dragging their heels so badly, and even worse, denying to pay dealers for bogus reasons, dealers now are holding the clunker that was traded in (by law, they must) AND keeping the new car on the lot till they get the $3500 or $4500 from the govt. Some dealers here in PA are releasing the new car if you will give the dealer the $3500/4500 up front, and once the govt. sends the money, they refund you the $3500/4500. Lots of dealers have found out the hard way that they were becoming the govt.'s banker on this program, and some dealers are stretched pretty thin over giving away all this money and not collecting from the govt. just yet.

So, these cars can be parted out....go to the dealer and ask if you can buy parts off the cars. They can sell you the parts, and may be willing to do so eagerly since they're taking a huge hit waiting on govt. checks to arrive.

I know one guy locally kinda "parted out" his own car to himself, keeping lots of trim and interior parts. The dealer didn't care since they had no intention of parting out the car anyways. So he made out big time.
