Generally 2 things... starter, or low/dead battery. If all your lights stay on and bright, but it still clicks, starter is likely. Sometimes you can hit the starter / solenoid with a hammer and it will get it going again for a few times, but not always.

Check the connections at the battery to make sure they are not corroded or loose.

x3. Comparison wise it doesnt take near as much juice to run the radio or windows as it does to energize the starter. Try jump starting the car. If if starts with cables then you know what the deal is. My wifes car had 2 dead cells in her battery so it would read 12v on the meter but could not deliver the massive amps needed to goose the starter. First check for corrosion, then try the jump start..both of those are easy and free.

there isn't any corrosion at the terminals of the battery. It wasn't sitting, I drive it everyday and actually just drove it a short distance to get gas, got gas, and went to leave and click. This is the second Pontiac to die in such fashion(my 88 firebird fuel pump died at the pump with a full tank)Also I believe this is the original Delco battery with the "eye" and it show green.

I also tried a different battery which apparently had less juice and it also "clicked"

I'm still leaning towards the solenoid / starter. However, it is possible the battery cables are corroded internally, and not the external connectors.

yeah, wack the starter on a solid part with a hammer. it should get it going for you. this is only a temporay fix, it will need to be replaced.

My car did that the other night, ended up being the positive cable was just loose enough to not deliver the juice to the starter, but everything else worked fine. Tightened the cable down and it was fine.

The other time that happened this past December it turned out my OEM battery was shot.
