Checked out about getting my 99 repainted
I went to the place I had my Tracker fixed at since they did a great job...
I asked them for an estimate for touching up scratches and dings since I have no rust or dents. I do need the whole drivers door repainted though.
They told me $1700 for the whole car to get resprayed!
I also asked about getting a headlight and grille also.... $468 for them to do it seperate or $300 if they do it at the same time as the car.
Is this a pretty good price? ($2000 for a complete respray and new headlight and grill.)
And is it worth it on a 99 with 117K that I'm going to trade in hopefully within a year or two.

You probably won't see that $2k back in the cars resale value. I can't say for sure if $1700-$2000 is a good price, but I know those who have tried the $300 specials have been sorely disappointed in the quality of the work. I'm assuming for your quote they would be doing a full sand and prep on the car, and not just spray over what is already there?

If you planned on keeping the car for a while then it would be worth it to get a new paint job, but if your just gonna sell/trade it in a few years its not worth the investment as at most it may add a few hundred to the value as apposed to the same car with a few dents, dings, and scratches.

A paintjob that costs more than the car is worth is never a good idea...

I wouldn't say its an investment either. Its not going to bring you income... ever most likely.

It pays to shop around. It pays even more to do some of the work yourself.
You can strip the car down yourself...tails, headlights, hood, all the plastics, the rearview mirrors...and have those painted off of the car. Less masking is required, and the overall quality of the paint job improves. Most shops will give you a break on the labor portion (some of it), but don't expect them to put it all back together either.
Remember, the largest portion of the paint job is in the prep work. Even a 300.00 paint job can look decent IF the car is properly prepped.

I wouldnt get a daily driver repainted, because the metal will be more likely to rust faster.

If it's sanded to bare metal before painting. If your paint is in relatively good condition, not chipping, or cracked, or surface rust showing through, you can sand it down to get good mechanical adhesion, then apply the new paint over the old.
Bye Bye:
