Engine just dies, no DTCs no surging.

Post by azmedic85308 »

For the last month or so I have been having problems with hard starts on my car and now the last week or so the car just randomly dies. Not like a surging, stalling,or jerking condition. The engine just turns off and I have to restart it again. I have no DTC codes being thrown and everything appears to be intact. Any ideas?

By hard starting, do you mean that the starter cranks the engine, but it takes a long time to start, or doesn't the starter activate?

If it cranks, but won't start, check the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. Pull the vacuum line off from it, and check for fuel, or the smell of fuel. If you find any, replace the fuel pressure regulator, but don't drive the car. An errant spark can destroy the upper intake manifold and start a fire. If that's fine, check the fuel pressure. Then, we can move on from there, if no problems are found.

Well considering I just pulled the vacuum line off the FPR and fuel dripped onto my hand...im assuming that may be the source of my problem????

Well, since you disconnected it at the FPR and got a fuel shower, that tells me it's most likely not the pump. :D

Sounds like the FPR.

Definitely. Replace the FPR, and see where that leads.

Just swapped out FPR's ($81 bucks at Napa, Delphi brand) took a whole 5 min. I have drove the car approximately 30 min since changing and turned the car on and off 4 times, unable to duplicate the hard start or stalling. It did crank a bit hard the first couple times, but it has not stalled since. Problem fixed? Discuss.

Sounds good. It took a little cranking to re-start as the fuel system had to fully re-pressurize itself from having been opened (At the regulator). Normally when you start it, it just needs to pressurize the rail and injectors.

Yes, it definitely sounds like it was your problem. Keep an eye on it, and if the problem comes back, let us know, and we'll do our best to diagnose it.
