My VE tuning this weekend

Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

My VE tuning this weekend

Post by Allmachtige »

I found the results interesting and maybe some of you will too:

Last year:

After this weekend:

What intrigues me about this is before the cam/headers I actually had a very leaky engine. Injector o-rings were shot, LIM gaskets were near non-existent, and the motor was building up oil sludge.

I suppose that explains why my old VE table from last year has more fuel commanded at the low MAP kPa's. Either way when I started my VE tuning this weekend the lower MAP's were very rich (-21), but the high MAP's were lean (+8). Now most of the cells are between -5 and +5.

Oh by the way, for anyone who has never done a VE tune...it sucks beyond your wildest dreams.

why put so much time into it? isn't the VE only used during warmup, or when sensors malfunction, etc?

There is a lot of debate that takes both sides on this. Does it help? Is it pointless?

The argument is that the PCM actually references the VE table even during normal operation.

Also HPTuners says, "It is also used to provide transient condition correction to the VCM main airmass calculations."

First gear feels solid as a rock, but it always has so it might be in my head.

Sometime this week I'll get back out on the country roads and see how 2nd is when I complete my timing tuning.
