Popping Speaker...

Post by m1030w6 »

Okay so I have a little problem my passerger side speaker keeps blowing out on me.. and I dont have a clue why, I've put in 3 brand new speakers and within a few days it is popped and I'm not even turning the music up loud. and I'm stumped on why it would always be doing this and only on the passenger side... I have 6.5" speakers in the door panels. What should I look for as the reason it keeps popping? I'm clueless at this point.. Thanks in advance Nick

What speakers are you putting in it? Cheap speakers don't generally hold up very well, but should be ok with a stock stereo.

Does that speaker sound any louder then the others?
Make sure you have the balance and fade both centered. If they are biased towards that speaker, you might not think the music is that loud, but that speaker might be cranked.

After 3 speakers, I'm curious as to whether it's really the speakers that are bad. Have you tried hooking those speakers to a different audio source, or hooking them to the drivers side speaker terminal? I wonder if there is a wiring problem causing noise in the speaker that makes it sound blown when it really isn't.

If the speakers really are blown, then it'll take quite a bit of troubleshooting to narrow the problem down. Try checking to make sure the speakers really are blown and then get back with us.

The 1st set was Infinity Kappa's 6.5" I had in there.. My stereo is not stock. The infinitys lasted about a year before I had any problem with them ( I know they were popped because both of them went and the cone was actually pulled away on the driver side door) . The 2nd was just cheap set or wallmart pioneers since I couldnt afford anything better, and They didnt last long at all a day or 2 and the third set I have are Hifonics Zeus. All 6.5". I actually have is biased towards the driver side door speaker because of this, putting it so the balance is equal just makes things worse with that passenger speaker. The speaker is actually making crackaling (sp) sounds.

I will try the speaker on the driver side tomorrow sometime since it'll only take a few mins I don't have to remove the door panels anymore. This problem started around Oct. of 08. I didn't get around to switching the speakers till about 2 weeks ago and in the 2 weeks I've gone threw 2 sets of speakers. but I will give you idea a try tomorrow.

Thanks guys for the info and I'll get back to what I find out with switching the speaker around.

Seriously, if you're blowing speakers, your amp is where you should be looking. If you don't have an amp, then your head unit is where you should be looking. Just stop throwing speakers at it and have your amp or head unit tested. Speakers blow by what you send to them, not because you're buying "speakers that blow".

Sometimes when an amp dies it flatlines, meaning it puts constant dc current through one or more channels. Ive seen subs cook from this. It could happen to a deck as well I suppose. Kappas are pretty good speakers< they shouldnt have blown apart if you have your amp and or deck tuned properly

check your wiring in the door and make sure your speaker is in phase which means its pushing outwards instead of in my 92 had the same problem and it turned out when you up the size of the speaker in the doors it sometimes stretches the wires to the speaker ive been through 4 speakers in my drivers door and im running alpines all the way around so they arent exactly cheap to replace and if your running and amp check and make sure your amps wiring isnt starting to fall apart like cheap wiring kits and with the stereo you shouldnt have any problems with that because the other 3 channels are working correctly from what you put i would check the wiring on the door and amp if you have one and make sure your running the speaker in the correct phase
