If I watch the belt tensioner when someone starts up my car there is quite a jump. A little more motion than I would expect anyway. Is that normal?
A few days ago I started getting some unwanted noise at around 1K rpms. It sounded like a pulley or bad alty so I've been checking it out. That's when I noticed the tensioner moves so much on startup. Will I have to replace the entire assembly? or can I just change the pulley and expect less movement from the tensioner on startup?

Re: Tensioner pulley question
The movement is a matter of the amount of force needed to start things moving as opposed to keeping them moving once started.freneticburn wrote:If I watch the belt tensioner when someone starts up my car there is quite a jump. A little more motion than I would expect anyway. Is that normal?

Does the pulley make noise when spinning it without the belt? Does it have movement in the bearing? I replaced the pulley only on my 98. It's a reverse thread.

Swampthing, you're referring to the S/C idler. He's N/A, he's talking the serpentine idler. IIRC, it's all one piece.

Re: Tensioner pulley question
I have a 93 SSE (NA). I was able to replace just the plastic pulley. Mine would "jump" considerably when I gassed it in Park (bearing drag). I had trouble getting the plastic one from Autozone to work (would lock when I tightened the LH bolt), so ended up with a metal one, for an SC motor, I believe.
