I have a 2000 SSEI that suffers from the common bad EPC solenoid symptoms. I don't know if it triggers the P1811 code or not. My question is whether I could get an OBD II scanner and leave it plugged in while driving. When the whining and harsh shifting was noticeable, I would turn off the car (when safe) and reset the code (assuming it is present).
I realize I would only be buying time and that this is not a long-term solution.
Thanks!
Harsh Shift/Pump whining- will reset OBD codes buy time?

If the SES light isn't on, then it hasn't set the code. I had this same issue on my 00 Ei. First thing I would try is some seafoam TransTune, and a trans fluid and filter change. If that doesn't fix it, some have had good luck with installing a shift kit.

Code 1811 will not set the SES. It will store the code and command maximum line pressure. Resetting the code will take care of things for a short time, but start with what beast suggested and try some Trans Tune, then drop the pan to change the fluid and filter. When you do this, you may want to consider installing a shift kit which could solve the P1811 being set, and the harsh shifts. The whining is more something to worry about, as that generally doesn't accompany the harsh shifting.

Really? My 00 set the SES after I took a WOT run. Took it to the mechanic and it was the 1811 code.

Really. P1811 will not set the SES light. Perhaps something else tripped it, and that code was also found. Here's a page from a FSM. Different vehicle, but same information for our cars.

My 2000 Sle was harsh shifting and whining as well after driving for 30 min or so. I remember my wife asking me WTF that noise was...haha
Did a seafoam treatment with new fluid/filter...helped some...but didn't fix it. did another seafoam treament and then drained with new fluid...again, helped some...no fix.
so i bought the intense shift kit setup and installed it with lightest setting for shift firmness....and have never had the problem since. shifts like it should and no whining sound.
i was a lucky one i guess...but it helped my situation. i think the key here is getting it taken care of sooner then later. $150 in shift kit and fluid and such to at least try is waaaay better then 1500 and up for rebuild....
