Re: twilight sentinel photocell ??? 1998 Pontiac Bonneville

It's a flat button, slightly smaller in diameter than a dime, located about three inches inboard from the A pillar on the driver's side. It's easy to remove; just pry it out with the tip of a pocket knife. The one on my '95 Bonneville never worked right, even after I grafted in a headlight switch ...

Re: GXP style L36 decal?

My dad used to have an Olds Silhouette minivan that had the '3800' badges on the front fenders. I can't remember what year model it was, maybe a '92 or '93. I don't think the L36 and L67 designations were ever used in any external marketing; they were only used internally.

I have never seen an ...

Re: LSS dun let me down

I topped off the tank today and calculated the mileage manually. It came out to 23.1 vs 23.7 on the DIC. I'd say 0.6 mpg is definitely within a reasonable margin of error.

Re: LSS dun let me down

It's from the DIC. I still haven't refueled since I topped the tank off on the way home from picking the car up. I understand what you're saying, though. I've experienced the same discrepancy with both my Auroras. The DIC on both of those cars calculated mpg a bit more generously than the manual ...

Re: LSS dun let me down

I've now had the Impala for a few days and it's starting to grow on me. Sure, its kind of bland looking. But for the spoiler on the trunk lid and the 17-inch alloy wheels, it would be indistinguishable from a state motor pool vehicle. But hey, there's sometimes something to be said for not standing ...

Re: LSS dun let me down

Well, the LSS is now sold (got my asking price, btw) and I'll be going to pick up my Impala next Friday, 10/31, which for me will make it "Impalaween".

Re: LSS dun let me down

Okay, Dad has found a Buick Lacross for Mom, which they will be getting in the next week or so. That means the Impala will be coming my way and the LSS is officially for sale. I'd love to see it go to someone who truly appreciates it so I've posted the details on it in the For Sale or Trade section ...

Re: LSS dun let me down

I agree with you about the Bonneville's cockpit styling. I like the way it cradles the driver. It seems like GM borrowed heavily from that when they designed the Aurora. Yeah, the styling of the Impala is a bit on the bland side. So is the LSS, for that matter. The Aurora style seats are definitely ...

Re: LSS dun let me down

I picked the LSS up yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to find another minor annoyance seems to have corrected itself in the course of replacing the alternator. The transmission has had hard shifts for the past year or so, but somehow, the rough shifts are now gone! I have no idea how the ...

My mechanic called this afternoon and the car is fixed. Just the alternator as I surmised.

Re: LSS dun let me down

In an interesting turn, my dad called me out of the blue last night to tell me he's thinking of getting my mom a new car since her 2011 Impala's warranty is about to expire due to age rather than miles. He said he'd let me have that car for trade-in value, which would be a nice step up since that ...

LSS dun let me down

So last night I was driving home from a music festival about an hour away from where I live. As I got to the outskirts of my town, the battery discharge light came on. It was a pretty desolate area, so I decided to keep going. Just as I got to the city limits, the instrument panel want totally ...

Re: 1997 Bonneville misfire

Ignition coils are often a culprit. I've had to deal with that on three of the last four cars I've owned. If any of your coils don't have numbers on them, they've probably already been replaced. The factory coils have numbers on them, indicating which cylinders they're connected to. Try replacing ...

Re: '97 Olds LSS brake line issue

I finally got the car back today. It was a leaking brake line. There's only one original brake line left on the car and my mechanic said it looked okay even though it had some rust on it. We'll just keep an eye on it and see what happens.

'97 Olds LSS brake line issue

So last summer, I had to replace the brake lines on my '97 Olds LSS. The car had spent most of its life in the Philadelphia area and they were pretty much rotted out by salt. The car sat at my parents' house in Charlotte for about five months while I had their van to move. During that time, my dad's ...

Re: 1994 Olds 88 Royale tranny problem coasting shifting to

Just a slight clarification: OBD 1.5 was used on both '94 and '95 models. As far as I know, the only difference between OBD 1.5 and OBD 1 is that OBD 1.5 uses the OBD 2 style connector but most of the pin sockets on the connector are empty. Everything else is pretty much identical. And yes, it's ...

Re: I'm getting my LSS back.

You're absolutely right. Like you, I am very debt-averse. I have no intention of buying a brand new car; I'll let someone else take that heavy up-front depreciation. The sweet spot comes when you can find a low-mileage used car around four or five years old that you can write a check for.

A newer ...

Re: I'm getting my LSS back.

So I got home with the car late Thursday night and almost immediately discovered a braking problem, as in there was almost no fluid in the reservoir. I'd had to replace most of the brake lines last summer because they were rotted out. Why they don't make them out of stainless steel is beyond me. I ...

I'm getting my LSS back.

I haven't seen my '97 LSS in almost six months, but I'm getting it back tomorrow. I left it at my parents' house in late January when I borrowed their Silhouette van to move. I finished that process at the end of March and have just been too busy to get back down there and pick the car up. The van ...
