I had some time today so I took the battery I have been charging and placed in our 2004 Bonneville GXP. So I want to give as much info as possible so I can get some help with a few issues. 1st I hooked the battery up an have been told to hook the pos. Cable 1st? Then neg. I did that as I was tightening the neg cable the horn starts bowling. Un hooked the neg. And got out of my pocket the keys. Reattached the neg. No problem now. I get in and cycle the key on and off 4 or 5times and then crank. It starts runs little rough and I lightly give it a bit of gas and it smoothes out.
The left side check engine light us on, on the dash. ( didn't know there were 2 on the dash) Car sounds good, but after a few minutes I get that rotten egg smell. I shut the car off.
I get out my rather cheap code reader and here is the list: P0171 /P0174/ P0410/P1372/ P1811/ P0897/P0300.
I am afraid to start the car again until I get some feed back & suggestions. And I do some further research .
The code reader said,, think it said fuel trim, in the past when I have dealt with a disconnected battery on my Mustang there is a procedure for draining the capacitor. Does GM require that too? How is it done?
Is it best i don't drive the car until I get these issues cared for? If I want to take it to my mechanic about 8miles away can I drive it? Or tow?

Lets break down these codes.
P0171 - lean fuel bank 1
P0174 - lean fuel bank 2
P0300 - random misfires
P0410 - malfunctioning Secondary Air Injection System
P0897 - Transmission Fluid Deteriorated
P1372 - Crankshaft Position Sensor Signal Malfunction
P1811 - Maximum Adaptive and Long-Term Shift Times

The lean codes are from a vacuum leak, most likely the elbow on the back of the intake or the boot on the front of the intake.
The misfire code is probably from a bad ignition coil
The air injector code is something you can ignore for now, just emission related
The transmission fluid is at end of life and needs replacement
The crank sensor has a bad signal, could be the sensor or wiring
The transmission had detected a problem and turned up the line pressure to try to save itself. Probably a bad EPC solenoid inside the transmission.

None of these codes are bad enough to not drive to the mechanic 8 miles away unless the check engine light starts flashing from really bad misfires.

Thanks for the post.
I got scared when I smelled the rotten egg smell at the back of the car.
I don't know if this makes any difference but this is the 1st this car had run in about a year. It was awesome hearing it run!

The rotten egg smell is just unburned fuel from the misfire running through the cat. The misfire might even self clear after the car is driven for a while if its been parked that long. Clear out all the codes and drive it for a while and see what comes back.
