How to get to HVAC mode actuator to replace?

Hi guys,

I need to replace my HVAC mode actuator on my 2000 SLE; it's stuck blowing only to the floor. Last night I got as far as removing the driver's kick panel and ductwork; moved some module out of the way, and removed a plastic 1/2" hose.

I can see the mode actuator now, but just could not get my hand in there enough to use a wrench or screwdriver to get the old one off. And of course it's real uncomfortable laying there with my back half over the door threshold. I've just spent an hour searching this forum and other sites and can't find any help on what else I need to remove, other than to start removing everything, to get at that mode actuator to replace it.

Any ideas? Thanks.

When we did mine on my 2000SLE we removed the driver's front seat.
You can then lay on your back and get up in there.
Its tight but it can be done.

I had to replace a couple of those fairly recently. It was the biggest PITA repair I've done on that car yet.

I don't have any specific "this works" tips, having blocked the painful memories, but I believe I ended up using a very small ratchet at some point in the process.

If I had to do it again, I might even remove the front seats and the console first. Probably overkill, but it would sure give me more working room, and give me a chance to make sure there's no water accumulating under the carpet at the same time.
