Torque converter or transmission pump?

Now that I've prety much pinpointed the p0102 cel "generic"code. As it turns out to be intake gaskets. I have always had a low pitch sound coming from the transmission. I have never had any shift issues related to this. I'm the second owner and the first has a brother with a full service garage with good mechanics. I've had this car for almost 6 years and other than the starter I've had no real issues until recently. Vats went bad in ignition price quoted around $1000 bucks to fix, search here in forums, trip to radio Shack total cost to repair $ 1.25., cel code p0102 possible repair costs, the same as owning a boat with a hole in it. Come to the Pontiac Bonneville club forums read everything related to possible thrown code cause to numerous to mention let's just say you will need a DVV and a lot of patience. My point is this forum has saved me a lot of money I don't have to waste.
This sound is coming from the front of the tranny housing it's like dry bearings spinning, this is why I believe it's the transmission pump, but I'm not certain. Since I need to replace the intake gaskets U&L in the car had 150k miles I figure go ahead rebuild the engine economically replace anything that's on the lower side of tolerances. Since the engines out might as well address this annoyance before it becomes a problem.
I would greatly appreciate any advice members have on anything I've said here and if someone has had the misfortune of this sound turning into a long walk home from the junk yard, I'm thankful for your input. I haven't searched the forums yet, but doing that's a given. I want to stay active here so other people can at the very least be knowledgeable when talking to a mechanic. I myself can't believe when I tell someone that their thermostat doesn't display the temperature of the car on there dashboard; look at me like I'm trying to tell them the sky is red.
So to summarize my ramblings
When I start the car I have always (6 years now) had a low pitch whistle like sound almost like dry bearings grinding. After I let the car idle for about 10 seconds in the summer to about 20 seconds in the winter (getting colder now
)it is completely gone. Transmission fluid is over due for change when checked it smells used not burned doesn't leak, I've had the same quart I bought the day I bought the car. It's very loud but goes away completely to the point I can hear a lifter pecking around in cylinders 1 or 2. No shifting issues at all excellent response to hard driving and when just cruising I barely tell it changing gears.
Again thanks for any and all input.
I love my bonnie but not half as much as my dog Loki loves it, I have even made people ride in the back seat when it's our "let's go for a ride boy"time. Not kidding.
