Bummer, man. Resembles the damage to my 93 when my daughter totaled it for me. The airbag deployment is pretty much the coup de gras. Interesting that the passenger SIR breaks out a perfectly good windshield for you. When I saw mine I asked the kids with my daughter which one wasn't wearing the seatbelt - it looked like a head went into the windshield. They claimed to all be wearing belts and since there was no hair stuck to the inside of the windshield, I believed them. Mine wasn't worth fixing either.

Yeah I was by myself so I was wondering why the pax airbag blew. Guess it blows when the driver's side blows? I had a semi heavy backpack on the pax seat so I figured that's why it blew. Had my coffee in the center cup holder and it was still there. I always think my drink will fall when I make turns cause there not deep at all but it held in place and it is a tall coffee mug.

from the owners manual, its not the impact that deploys the bags: It is how fast you come to a dead stop. so the system knows when to deploy by inference......lol pretty cool and advanced for the year.......that's for my 2000. your beast may be the same system.

There is a sensor under the hood latch for the air bags on the 92-99 cars. No type of sensors to know if anyone is in the seat. When the sensor gets hit hard enough it blows both bags. I once saw a video of somebody hitting one with a hammer and the airbags went off.

I was gonna say, one sensor, placed in the radiator core support area. That's it. All air bags in the car are triggered by this sensor. It's basically a switch. Once compressed it completes the circuit. No load level sensors like later GM vehicles in the seats, which is done more to determine blow-out force of the airbag to help de-power them some for lighter passengers. It's triggered once that switch is closed via compression, I.E., the front of the car collapsing due to impact.
I guess I don't understand why people think that these things are run on some super high tech logic systems and what not. The sensor (or switch), is in the front of the car. Not the fenders, not the doors, not the roof, trunk, or rear bumper... Getting hit in any of those places won't trigger them. Getting hit in the front WILL.

Very glad you were not injured. Really sorry about the car. That's a real bummer. - BC

Got some good news! Instead of loosing my bonny to the crusher, I found someone that wants her and willing to put her back together again. Bad news is... I gave it away to this person. So rather than letting it go to scrap I told the guy to pay the towing fee of $150 and you can have her. Best I'll get is a refund for the towing from my insurance but at least she'll get to continue on living after all!

Good to hear that, you should send them our way (unless they are already on Pontiac Bonneville Club)

On a '98? 6 months of insurance premiums and you forked out more than it's worth. Especially the youngsters here. Unless it's less than 10 years old, I don't even consider collision an option. But hey, that's me.

You know, you really shouldn't assume...

I didn't do collision on the Suburban... For the amount of any damage vs. what I paid for it and it's value, I just consider it "disposable" should something like this happen.
It's a sad way to look at it, but reality.

For full coverage on the 04, and just the minimum requirement on the 96, I pay $975/6 months.
