Trans Issue

Okay, went to leave for work yesterday morning and after backing out of the drive I put the car in drive and it wouldn't move, just revved up. Finally I put it into 1st gear and it kind of slammed into gear, but it allowed the car to drive as it normally would, I just manually shifted it on the way to work, once I'm at 50-55MPH I can slide it into drive and it drives just as it normally does except if I gas it suddenly it will slip out of gear and the RPMS just jump up. Currently pulling the engine & trans from an 01 Grand Prix GT that has the 3800 so trying to find the problem so if possible I can use parts from this Grand Prix. Thanks for any input in advance guys!

went through exact same issue....first of all assuming the check engine light has not come on ,then your problem most likely is you busted the foward band.(verifiable by dropping trans oil pan and look for a small metal chunk approx. 1/2 to 1 inch....if there is a piece of metal than thats your problem) also driving it by starting out in 1 or 2 is the only way to move the car once the foward band has broke,BUT beware ...driving off your MANUAL BAND (1 and 2) will not last very long. (i was able to squeeze approx 2 months using 1 and 2 gear but then it wore out and all i had was reverse)

I will be doing that tomorrow to check as I am still having the problem, though I have not been driving the car unless it's on the expressway, don't like to have to stop, go, stop, go as I would driving through town. If it is the forward band is it hard to replace it?

Dropped the pan and sure enough the chunk of metal you described was in there. I drove the car for 2 weeks or so the way it was but only to work and back because it is a straight shot on the highway and didn't want the excess wear on the trans. Have the trans out now and was going to have it rebuilt & drop it back in but I'm getting quotes from $1200 to $1500 - was NOT expecting that at all.
I've been searching all over for a used trans that will bolt right in rather than rebuilding mine since I figured it'd be way cheaper and trying to find the correct trans is becoming a nightmare! Year, Make & Model specific?!?
Is there anyone in Michigan that has a good trans for sale? I will gladly come and get it, seems how I've not been able to find a single one yet. Car is a 2000 SSEi and has the CHB trans. ANY help is much appreciated! Thanks!

hey i replaced my foward band WITHOUT taking tranny out of car. theres a video on youtube "4t65e hd rebuild in car" i believe. by watching his vids i was able to rebuild my own. (in the parking lot of the apt complex i used to live in calif few months ago...lol) that dude saved me alot....total cost was under $100 by doing it myself.
and especialy if you took yours out rebuild it then slap it back in.....these cars are easier to work on ,even the trannys
