94 SSEi random stalling

After being away from home for 2 weeks now I've finally had some time to drive the Grizz. Ran fine yesterday. One stall on a cold start but it fired right up immediately. Longer run today for 20 minutes on the freeway and it started to buck and the gauges went from 80 to 140 just before it stalled. It was bucking and felt like the brakes were being applied..but they weren't because the anti lock system has been disablebled and the traction control does not work. I coasted to the side of the road with cars whizzing by, stopped with my hazards flashing and restarted the engine. It fired up right away and I quickly accelerated back up to 100. About 10 minutes later while still at cruising speed it began to stutter and the gauges did that wierd fluctuation but it didn't stall and we made it home for the evening.

any ideas are welcome.... :helpsmilie:

Once in while when I turn the ignition key nothing happens. I wonder if the ignition switch is bad??
Could this cause random stalling?

It kinda acts like a crank sensor, but maybe the switch is at fault.

I might suspect the crank sensor but it was replaced a year ago with a new GM unit at the dealer with new computer and ICM
20k on the TPS, O2 and cam sensor. Used MAP, MAF and EGR
New plugs

But what if one one wires to the crank sensor is broken .......

Resplice it. It sounds like an electrical problem. Maybe a bad ground somewhere. Check all the engine grounds, and battery connections. Know it's simple, but I'd start there.

Sounds simple so why has it been to the dealer six times and spent $2500 on parts that don't fix the problem.
GM asked for two more hours at $120/hr to diagnose again.
I only have one more week here in Edmonton and now the Torrent just lost its instrument frikken cluster!! 4 days for the part and it's holiday week in Canada and US!!
There will be fireworks !

My advice to my daughter is to sell it ASAP
Someone will get a good deal and find the wire.

lol the dealer is ripping you off. It's probably just a bad ground somewhere. Go to a yard and pull some old sensors and stuff, and if you think one is acting up, try swapping it out. You won't see that much of a gain, but you'll at least be able to notice the difference if you've got a quiet work area and a keen instinct.

Every sensor including the PCM has been replaced within the last 5k miles
One visit the dealer replaced a ground
Time is one of the few things I seem to have.
I need to rely on professionals to fix their product.
Dealers don't care about cars over 7 years old.

What shape are the ground busses in?

Also, do you have a spare PCM? We all know that the 94-95 doesn't have a perfect history with PCM's

I'm no expert by any means, but if all the gages are going crazy when the car stalls/bucks/dies, I would think it is an electrical issue. Maybe a bad ground somewhere. Bad grounds are very difficult to locate and repair. I fought one on my '92 for close to 4 years. It's probably close to 5 years ago since I fixed it. No trouble since. - BC

Do you have any auto start on the vehicle because I get the same problems, I have mine in right now because it bucked like you were saying and it said it had a random misfire

No auto start. All stock.
Acts much worse when cold. Multiple stalls until it warms.
I'm not drivng it now and fear it will sit parked until it's sold.

I went through the FSMs for the '92 SSE I have. It sure looks like if you '94 and my '92 SSE are wired the same the only common cause to all the gages turning off and the engine shutting down is the ground. The only gage that feeds through the PCM is the Tach. You have a bad ground somewhere common to both the ignition and the Instrument Panel. If the lights are affected, I'd go for the either the battery or the ground cable to the battery. If the lights are not affected I'd look at bus in the fuse relay and all the connections for that ground. - BC

Have we ruled out the ignition switch?
