I call it my pretend supercharger..haha..but no really, what causes this whine under acceleration? is it just a series II common thing? because I have heard an oldsmobile that does the same thing..none of our old L27 motors did this...

The power steering pump is a usual culprit.

Low transmission fluid can cause a whining noise also.

Good point. Does it change with RPM or vehicle speed?

both are full, it does it with an RPM increase...its done it since I got the car...bought it with 160 and now has 172. Performed flawlessly, she is due for a tranny flush though..I took it in for an oil change since it was super cold out...they said the fluid was getting dark...

Always wondered this myself. Mine does the same thing accelerating up to about 25 mph. I'm sure it does it after that as well, but then the engine noise is louder and it fades out. Whine increases with speed, RPM, you name it. Fluids are good in my case too. Best I could figure is that somehow it seems that there is a cover missing under my car that seems to expose the teeth of a large gear slightly (flywheel?).
Typing that out makes it sound dangerous, but I've noticed it ever since I dropped the pan on my transmission the very first time when I bought the car. You can see it near the pan and again you can see it peaking through just beside the starter. Anyhow, I have no evidence of that being the case, but I imagine maybe our cars are allowing more sound out because of it. Who knows?

My whine ended up being the ac compressor pulley bearing.
