Short block "interchange"

Is a '98 W-body L67 short block a direct fit to an '03 H-body L67? I've a '98 W-body short block with maybe 30K and my '03 H-body has developed a bit of a knock.

Is there a derivative of the VIN stamped into these blocks for ID purposes? That interests me considerably. If there is then it's likely that a CarFax type report might indicate mileage at "salvage" of the '98 W-body short block that I have. It should be easy enough to create a valid VIN from the stamped derivative if there is one.

Blocks are the same. No VIN markings at all. The only identification are some stickers behind the AC compressor bracket and the front valve cover.

That's what I needed to know and it's what I thought but I was hoping that I had overlooked the possibility of the VIN derivative somewhere on the block!
