The Hail Mary Trans Build

I have and this trans in about a year, and only put about 3,000 miles on it. I figured that id throw this up there so everybody could see the build that i did

So over the Past few weeks I have been building a bad ass trans because of the 2nd IS breaking on me.

Specs of the Build

2003 4t65e

Meziere billet flex plate
Intnese 300m Input shaft
Chrome Moly Pump shaft
Precision 3000 Stall Converter
Valve body and Channel Plate Modified by TEP
GMR 1' Chain 3.29
GMR Torsen Diff
Hardened 4th Gear
Raybestos Stage 1 for Input and 2nd Gear
Raybestos Z pack for 3rd Gear
Raybestos High Energy 4th Gear.
Intense Shift kit

So its been over a year of babying the car. I first Broke my Stock Trans back 2 days before Christmas 2010. Sucked.

Image

so the trans had to come out
Image

fast forward to June 2011 and I was hearing weird sounds and issues........

Here is what I found
Image

Image

Image

So ya that Trans came out in September
Image

and replaced with a GM SRTA that i happened to come across at a great price.
Image

Fast forward to March 2012

kaboom, broke the stock IS in the GM SRTA trans......so that leads to the epic build.
Image

so i took a nice tag along ride and dropped it off here at work
Image

Image

and Started the trans removal
Image

Makes it nice to have access to this stuff
Image

Image

Started with the Stock 03 trans what had about 66K on when the IS let go.

Image

notice the goodyness in the top of the pic
Image

Found that there are actually output shafts that are used in the 4t65. one is slightly longer
Image

and also the longer one also has a rib. its supposedly marked as the HD version, but I am unable to confirm 100%
Image

Intense 300m Input Shaft
Image

also the reluctor of the GMR set was Bolted by the previous installer
Image

Welded it so it never becomes a problem.
Image

I decided to go with the Raybestos Frictions and Steels over the Borg Warner after spending alot of time on the phone with the companies.

I went with the Stage 1 Red's for Input, and 2nd. Raybestos Z pack for 3rd and Raybestos High Energy for 4th.

Input (5 clutches instead of the stock 4)
Image

Image

Here is the Input module assembled (friction and steels)
Image

Image

Second Gear (added a thicker steel to get the tolerance tighter)

Second gear module

Third gear Z pack Module

Fourth Gear
Image

Fourth Gear Module
Image

Also have a modified 3rd gear clutch piston installed in the drum. Its from the 4T60 Trans and has more surface area and is alittle taller to provide the additional clamping force

i dont have pics of the build because its nothing really special, but i did have to take a pic of the GMR one last time.
Image

Image

So after it was all together I modified the rear trans mount with some "poly". As most of you know there is nothing made for some old person Bonneville, so you have to improvise.

New stock Mount
Image

and fillling it in
Image

Image

Image

new compared to the old stocker
Image

Also filled in the Drivers side Trans mount with the "poly"

Image

Image

Once the Trans was out, switched the flex to the Meziere Billet unit

Image

As an FYI i also tightened the rear cover bolts. as with every 3800 they were loose
Image

Image

Also while the trans was out, figured that i would make it pretty. Some rattle can to match the SC and the IC, that was painted in the past.
Image

Image

Installed the false KR kit or whatever, Put a nice blanket on the Case and wrapped the KR sensor too
Image

Final part finned AL pan
Image

After all this crap had 2 minor issues, got them resloved,

took the car out.......it was amazing

Looks like a solid build. I hope that LSD lasts for you, I haven't heard anything good about LSD's for the 4t65e at all.

We gotta hang out, Pat.

I think I have the raebestos/stage 1 stuff in mine. I also cheaped out and got a zzp input shaft.

I had to chuckle because the first 4 parts on your list are such a huge pile of money.

I bet that dude in the Challenger *shoot* his pants when he got his doors blown off by a grandma car. Even though the way yours looks it's far from that hahaha.

Maybe I missed it, but what final drive ratio do you have? I really wish I would have done a gear swap when I did the input shaft. I imagine that would be helpful in keeping the rest of the trans alive. Just couldn't decide on a specific ratio.

Pat, would those Clutches work in a 4T60E?
