Bring the Bonneville Back!?

Do you think it will ever be possible that Pontiac will bring it back? Or do you think it's gone forever in the times of sand!!

:dancing:

I myself think it's coming back, just give it time...

No, IMHO the G8 is definitely not the new bonneville!

I picked maybe.

Reason:
I'd like them to bring it back. But, in all reality I doubt that they will. IMO the G8 is a nice replacement for the BVille (if that is what it is supposed to be or not, I don't know...).

The Bonneville was a big sporty sedan, Pontiac dropped it from the lineup after '05 and the Grand Prix had to pick up the Bonneville market as a sedan. The G8 replaced both as the big sedan in Pontiac's lineup.

The G8 more of less IS the new Bonneville. Though I'd like see the name come back.

No.

And saying the G8 is the Bonneville doesn't make any sense. If it was a Bonneville it would have been called the Bonneville. When they brought back the Impala in the 90's they named it the Impala.

The G8 may be replacing (or even combining) a market, but its not a Bonneville.

Is it just me or does the new G8 just look plain ugly? If only they make a new car as attractive as the Bonneville except with RWD I might actually consider buying a new car.

The Bonneville name won't be back anytime soon.

In a few decades, who knows? Just pray it doesn't have a four cylinder.

Yep, just you. I think they look gorgeous.

I said maybe. I'd love to have the Bonneville name back, but there isn't any room in the line-up right now, and unless they pull F*rd's trick with the 500/Taurus on the G8, I don't see a Bonnevile for at least five years.

And I won't go so far as to say the G8 is gorgeous, but it is nice looking. It's the performance that makes it special, though.

No, and they shouldn't, because knowing GM, they'll probably make a half-assed retro bastard out of it. I hate to say it, and I know I'll get flamed for this, but the Bonneville (along with the grand prix and grand am) name has a bad taste in many people's mouths, particularly the consumer-reports-type. That's why they changed to that *dang* G-series naming system, which has failed miserably IMO.

Well that's what I meant by what I said. I should have used 'replaced' rather than 'is'.

But for a counter to that, Ford dropped the Taurus (I forget which year) and was replaced by the 500, which last year became the Taurus again, literally no change but the name, and maybe some options.

To be blunt, I don't want the Bonneville name back.

The name was attached to some of the greatest cars (all years) and I would like to see it stay that way instead of being stuck on some *shoot* car that GM is attempting to sell just by name recognition like Ford is trying...

I doubt we'd ever see the Bonneville name on a "retro" car simply because of the fact that outside of us and some Pontiac enthusiasts, nobody remembers the early Bonneville as anything special. The name doesn't conjure up legendary cars like the GTO, Charger, or 300 does.
Besides, other than the HHR and new Camaro, GM really hasn't bought into the "heritage car" thing. Their first attempt, the SSR, was a miserable failure, and the HHR is only doing so-so.

You think? I've always loved that design, and the sound it makes is awesome... I think they did a good job with that truck and it's under appreciated

And about the retro Bonneville, yeah you're probably right, but I still don't want the name to come back. Reason being: I KNOW it won't have a supercharger, or a HUD, or AL7s, or anything that makes a Bonneville a Bonneville to me...

i voted no, since seeing that most of the cars being brought back these days are much more popular than the bville ever was. it just doesnt have the legendary status that the camaros, gtos and chargers have. id love to see the bonneville back, but i just dont see it anytime soon.

and i hope to god pontiac doesnt bring it back just to rebadge a toyota like chevy did with the nova back in the late 80's

The problem they had was that it sold like crap. The reason for that was that it WAS crap. They published their original plans to base the SSR on the outgoing F-body, then switched it to the TrailBlazer platform, which added about half a ton to the weight of it, and turned it into a pig. They were heavy and relatively slow, when they had been promised as a performance vehicle. They had an initial sales burst, then it took forever to move the rest of them. Same thing happened to the T-Bird.

i said who cares because i LOVE mine but id love to see the Bonneville nameplate again.

again knowing GM ... Bonneville was a long time running and is an amazing car all around. In my neighborhood there are people who buy new cars all the time but i still see Bonnevilles from the 88 model year as much as the 00+ crowd. Talk about reliability.
But Bonneville nonetheless is marketed to the 35+ crowd and Grand Prix is in the same market. so Grand Prix being "sportier" to GM was kept i feel and Bonneville was ditched. Not saying that Bonneville isnt sporty, honestly i like the luxury of my car and the sporty. i think GP lacks in the luxury a bit.

I also think that the name wont come back anytime soon. we had a DeVille Concours and Cadillac changed it to DTS to give it that 3 letter name. My guess was so that the DeVille didnt sound so older crowd. just a guess
heck, i love my car.. when it dies im going to park it under the tree out back. it aint going anywhere..its part of the family

A car is a car. Bonneville holds no further meaning besides a reference to a car we know and love. The G8 is a great car IMO...no, its not a Bonneville, it doesn't even try to be...its more like a RWD GP on steroids.

I wouldn't be unhappy if they decided to re-use the name, but only if the car was fitting to hold that nameplate. A Bonneville is a Bonneville. Its an old, old name now, it doesn't hold the same excitement to the people who don't look far into cars, more than a name and how they look.

I'm keeping at least one Bonneville in my life. It'll change with whatever fuel is available in the future, but for now, its staying alive.
