Brake Rotors. Slotted, Drilled, Both or Plain?

Hey guys,
Im going to replace my front brake pads and rotors since the warning squels is letting me know that it is time. I was just wanting to know what (if any) kind everybody was using from slotted to drilled or both. I read that it is pointless to have slotted if the slots do not go all the way to the edge, scrapping the debris from the rotor, and that having drilled rotors could lead to stress and cracking. Or would it be best to just stick with plain jane's since more surface area is going to be better for braking? I don't plain on using this car for racing or such, just something more aesthetic to the eye and as well as an improved overall quality in braking without upgrading to a larger rotor or caliper. Thanks for the advice guys :beerchug:

Definitely no to the drilled ones since they might crack on ya. I'm running slotted and they are marginally better in the rain since the slot is going down to the center of the rotor and the water escapes that way. However, it's not THAT huge of a difference. I'll be honest, I did it for looks. :P

Dimpled, slotted and/or plain. Not drilled. There are marginal benefits from slots that don't go to the edge, but the ones that do go to the edge are the the best.

I've been looking for just slotted that extends to the edge of the rotor but no luck, only thing I've found that are even close to that are AC Delco and Raybestos BUT they have the cross-drilled with this particular slot.

I'm happy with my Power Slot rotors. (Same one's Carl has)

I have been happy with my EBC's, and they are black zinc coated, so you don't get rusty rotors behind your nice wheels.

FWIW, the slots on the Powerslots recess all the way to the inner edge of the rotor rather then the outer edge, so the water and gases still have a place to escape.
But as you mentioned yourself, you're not racing. A good ol' plain rotor will work for you just fine. :)

Hard for water and dust to escape against centripetal force...

True, but won't the pressure of pads being compressed on the rotor force the water/dust out? My slots are pretty clear and you can ask Will, my pads are demons when it comes to the dust department.

No, it won't force the water out. The rotation of the rotor at highway speed is going to be a much stronger force than the push of the pad against the face.

They help pull water off the pad much faster.

It's been said on this board before that slots to the edge cause the rotor to be more susceptible to cracks like in drilled holes as well.

If you get a quality rotor (is there such a thing on the H body?) then drilled holes are fine, they're OEM on enough applications now. But you need a name brand like Baer, Stoptech, Brembo, etc... Not drilled brembo blanks by whomever.

Pad selection is more important than rotor selection if you don't abuse brakes IMO.

I've been running some slotted rotors and ceramic pads that I got via rotorwork.com on the Bonneville. I have been very pleased with their performance, and low dust output compared to some 'unknown' brand ceramics that I had installed on stock rotors at my local Midas a few years back. I'll say that the big old Bonneville NEVER stopped as hard before this setup. I'd buy this setup again in a heartbeat, to be honest.

Slotted and Ceramic is a good combo on our aircraft carriers...Er I mean, cars.

:)

I do love the feel under hard braking, probably a bit more than the acceleeration, to be honest. I'm not sure if it was the combo not working together or what, but when i had the other ceramics on the stock/OE rotor, the grip just wasn't there. And the rotors ended up warping a little bit, not the WORST I've felt, but it was noticeable. I've read speculation that the extra heat of the grippy ceramic is too much for the OE rotor, but I can't say for sure that was the issue there. I've taken the current setup on a fairly spirited, but not all-out, run around a road course track, and really enjoyed them when entering the tight corners. Maybe they are a bit more brake than the average daily driver would need, but I think that the value and performance is perfect for me.

My Powerslots are slotted through the edge. I've been very happy with them in combo with Raybestos ceramic pads. Quiet, little if any dusting. I wouldn't mind some zinc coating to block the rust though.

I have Powerslots on the GTO. I would stay away from drilled rotors if they're drilled after the rotor is made, for the reasons already stated. If the rotor is cast with the holes pre-made as a part of the casting, and even better if it is cryo treated, then I don't see the issue.

I have slotted/drilled on the "V" and I HATE the pedal feel. I can't wait until I wear them down and replace them as I'm going back to a regular rotor. The previous owner put these on there now...

IIRC Powerslot has changed their design, John. I know Wren was complaining about it a while back...

I went ahead and ordered these rotors http://www.r1concepts.com/pontiac-bonne ... .62057.htm and the ceramic semi-metallic Raybestos pads. These have some good reviews and the look I wanted, I know you get what you pay for so I'll keep you all updated when I get them on :beerchug:
