Window Tinting

So now that it's gonna get warm out again, :bwoohoo: , I figured it's also time to start thinking about getting my windows tinted. I'm apprehensive of taking it to a shop for the professional treatment and a $200 bill, and also I don't want to go the Walmart route, have to cut the film myself and risk it looking bad immediately or in a few months when it bubbles and turns purple. So I've been thinking of buying a pre-cut quality tint package from this website,http://www.snaptint.com/car-tint-Pontia ... plete.html

Anyone with any experience with anything like this? Comes pre-cut to fit your car's windows perfectly, lifetime warranty to never turn purple or bubble, and only $75. Only real issue is I live in NYS, where tint is required by law to allow 70% of light through. Which seems pointless. Should I go 50% or 35% and hope the fuzz doesn't notice?

70% :bluetwitch:

I would (am going to) just pay to have it done. Most tint installers are way better at it than you and I will ever be.

I have a Mexican(allegedly) friend who is pretty good at it.

Make sure to get a ceramic tint. They don't fade to purple over time. I also recommend professional install. Mine came out flawless, done by the guys I know.

I'm getting my car tinted for 220.00 from a reputable buisness, all windows but front. Would not even think of doing myself, but you might do a good job.

For what its worth, I tried tinting my windows before I got them done because I figured it couldn't be too hard. After wasting a roll of tint and still no good results on one window I gave up and returned the rest of the tint I had and took it in. I paid about $280 but I got all windows (most places charge more for older Bonnevilles since they have 9 windows) and a strip on the windshield with lifetime warranty. I'm going to take it back soon and have one window redone because I noticed some small bubbles that have been bothering me even though they've probably always been there and I accidentally put scratches in one window putting a jack in my car so I'm going to see if he will retint that under warranty for a nice tip

Lifetime warranty FTW! Mine has the lifetime warranty as well. Ceramic tint + Lifetime waranty = no worries.

For quality work, I leave it to the professionals. Usually there is a warranty as well.

Don't the windows have some degree of tint from the factory? I remember something to the effect of 85%.

85% means 85% of the sun gets in, not much tint but at one time that might of been all you could get

50% is still almost pointless as far as appearance. Which is what is legal in Virginia on the front windows, but I went 35% all the way around because I didn't want the two-tone effect of 50/35. It's not terribly dark but dark enough. My dad & brother have both tried tinting on their own with not so good results. Normally it would be $200 for the job but in the spring/early summer there was a sale on tint and I was able to get the car done for $150 with the ceramic tint. It had a couple minor bubbles and I took it back and they came out of the shop immediately to fix it.

Going darker than legal depends on where you live and how you drive. Is it strictly enforced around you? Do you know anyone that has dark tint and is getting away with it/getting caught for it? Around me I've had several friends get busted for it (sometimes repeatedly) and I have several others getting away with it. It seems to be you don't get bothered about it if you're not already doing something else to attract attention from police. Though I've been pulled a few times while I had the tint and wasn't called on it. 8-[

I'm not saying do or don't, just giving my two cents.

x2. We have only been pulled over once by a Highway Patrolman at 1am during a Safe & Sober campaign, but other than that, we cross paths with city cops many times a day and never get pulled over. On my Bonneville though, I have no tint and keep it that way so there are no reason to get stopped.

The tint laws in NY only allow for 70% as mentioned, and that seems worthless, but putting on a ceramic tint will still help out in regards to saving leather seats and the dash parts from the ultraviolet light, which is still worth it.

I would get it professionally done. The pre cut tint is pretty good if you know what you're doing! My brother knows how to tint windows and he still left the back window of his GTP untinted because its a pain in the butt to do. And ended up having a professional place do it.

As far as the percentage that is up to you. Some cops like to be pricks about it but like others have mentioned if you are not doing something to attract the cops then they may leave you alone. Washington state law is 35% and I had 15% on my old car and never had a problem ;) but I drove my ex boyfriends car which had 5% on it and got pulled over and got a ticket! But it was also a very noticeable car and I just happened to be "hopping" down the road because it had airbags on it :) and thats why the cop pulled me over.

Ive had good luck doing my own. The cutting leaves a little to be desired but a sharp blade at all times is very important. If they have it pre cut and its right this shouldnt be a big deal installing it for anyone handy with tools. I am considering it for the $75 it costs on their site.

That's what I'm saying. Seems like you would want it professionally done because trimming the tint is hard and cheap tint bubbles and turns purple. If you get quality tint backed with a lifetime warranty and it's precut exactly to fit your car, you should be able to do if you take your time, be careful and get a friend to help.

Its different. LOL. You use some dish soap in water and it makes it so you can move the tint around. Patients is a virtue!!

Patience*

Not everyone has it, and some things are easier to just have the pros do it, and do it right the first time, just my .02 cents. :)

I got my tint done (30% all around) professionally for $150, which came with a lifetime warranty. I'll tell you it looks great and I don't regret having it professionally done.
