Extra grand a year to insure Pontiac : (

Well, running liability only with me as the primary driver but with an 18 year old in the house (no tickets, or accidents, kind of like guilty till proved innocent) would cost my wife and I another $1046 a year ON TOP OF the $1318 a year for the 04 van(comp and liability) and 93 Honda (just liability on this one ).
Yesterday I thought Hagerty might allow me to claim it as a "classic" especially since I would not drive it much to keep the miles down but "it isn't on the list" (2000 SSEI).
If it had been on the list it would have been in the $300 range a year.
On top of not being on "the list" your other daily drivers have to be 5 years old or newer which I have never fallen under or been asked for in the past by Hagerty and regardless of book value, something "this new" has to be insured for "at least 15 grand" (I had no problem with this but WOW on the other requirements).
I said to the lady that IMHO they are hurting themselves at least on the 5 years or newer requirement as the news will tell them people are keeping and running older cars to try and make ends meet but I just got a "Yeh?".
Anyone know any other good options? Would hate to have to sell my car I just got

I find it pretty funny that while the Lesabre and the Bonneville are two COMPLETELY different animals style wise, the fact that mine says Buick and only costs me $53 a month (I'm 19) vs. $87 for a Bonnie is kind of rediculous. I understand that I'm not supercharged, but dad's PAU that's got the L67 would have only cost me $59 for the same coverage, and it's an '03. I just makes me wonder what really goes on in the heads of insurance companies.
I just find it kind of weird that changing the body shape and name can alter the price of insurance that much, and of course it varies by location and company, but still..

On everything from my LeSabre to the T/A, I paid ~$100 a month for liability only. Currently I have full coverage on The Limo and still liability on the 85. Needless to say, at 19, the 01 is a tad bit more expensive to insure.

It's even funnier when you go from Bonneville to Grand Prix and it almost doubles again, lol. My insurance doesn't know/care anything but that my car is a Bonneville, it just says Pontiac Bonneville on my card.
Have you shopped around for insurance? Might be time to switch agents/companies...

I laughed when mine went DOWN from the 06 Impy to the 01 SSEi.

Add this to the off topic craziness factor:
I have progressive, and it's actually cheaper if I insure a 98-02 L36 Firebird than my Lesabre.....Please tell me how that works haha.

Yeah it's crazy what they charge for insurance.
Just to add this POS cadillac it was $500 extra for 6 months
And then I think like another $300 to add my lil bro
My insurance was very minimal. Maybe $150 to add Bonneville.
Then like $20/month for my liability. Since I was 16. 19 now.

We have always dealt with State Farm and they seem pretty fair.
When I just started driving, I was put primary on the oldest and cheapest car in the household. This happened to be my 92 Ford Tempo that I was driving. I received several discounts and awards for not having any tickets/accidents/etc which really knocked my insurance down. I still receive many of the discounts to this day, now 22 years old and still accident/ticket free...knocking on wood.
I would certainly shop around. All State has been advertising like $200 rebate checks for every so many months without an accident. This sound pretty interesting depending what the fine print reads.
As I'm graduating school soon and moving off on my own, insurance packages are one of the many main priorities which I will research and evaluate closely to make sure I'm getting the best "bang for the buck."

Also, if your son is good in school he can get a good student discount, you just need a copy of his transcript.

the one good thing about being as old as oprahs vibrator like me,insurance is cheap!!! you should do what my parents did. if i wanted to drive i had to buy my own car and pay for my own insurance. no if ands or butts.

I shopped insurance hard when getting my Cruze. I ended up paying less for full coverage on the Cruze than for liability only on the LeSabre.
Shop around, I bet you can find insurance for less.

When I was 18 I payed $120 a month for liability/uninsured moterist and I had a spotless driving record, and that was on a 1984 Ford Ranger 2wd 2.0L 4cyl gutless wonder lol. Now I had my own insurence seperate from my moms.
Something to consider, have him/her get his/her own and be covered only on his/her car....if he/she (sorry didnt notice if you said what your 18 year old was :D ) has his own of course. I know it was cheeper for me and my mom for me to get my own insurence then it was to add me and my truck to her policy. It would have actually cost me more to be on hers then it was for me to be on my own.

$3600/year for a car you paid $6k for? That doesn't make sense. Do you have a loan on it and have to have full coverage?

Andrew, he's in Canada. Nothing up there makes sense.

ANY car costs that much to insure for any male under 25. In fact, if I had a car under my ownership and policy right at age 18, I would be looking at MINIMUM $5-6k per year to insure it, liability only. It works out to about $3500 at this point (age 23-24), and as soon as I turn 25 it'll drop below $3000. I think my brother pays $2700 for his 04 Lexus IS300, at age 25. Remember my old 1991 Civic? Yeah I wasn't about to pay $5k to insure that one. We did creative things between registering my parents cars and my car between them and my uncle. Has made for some interesting questioning when I cross borders
Private insurance is highway robbery in this province, and especially in Toronto proper. Places like Quebec and British Columbia have government, public-run insurance that isn't out to gouge you, and holy hell, they're cheaper. I have full coverage, no loan. Dropping collision - to be done in the next year or so - maybe takes a hundred or two off, the BIG bulk is mandatory $1,000,000 liability coverage. What are liability levels in the states where you guys are?
Another thing about Toronto... *shoot* is inflated. $100,000 combined family income barely scrapes you into the middle class because any reasonable sized home in a not so great area is still going to start around $300,000. Average price home in this city approaches $450,000. Heck Andrew, your house in little town MN might fetch $500,000 if it were in the right spot of the city here, especially if it's fully renovated.
