I found this race and plan to run in it. Looks like fun and I planned to head to Vegas in May anyways. Check it out.

Yeah, I've seen that before. It's pretty cool, but it's hard on engines and tranny's, as a long distance at that speed, heat kills. You'll probably be limited to 90 or 100 MPH overall, unless you have a cage, harnesses, etc...

It would be alot of fun but I really dont want to run my car at 100 miles an hour flat out for an hour. My luck it would blow.

This would be a blast. I, however, agree with others, don't really wanna run my L36 through that torture either...I know these engines are pretty bulletproof..but still!

Rent something and run it.

Really? I'm certain the engines and transmissions can cope at 100mph plus. The top speed of my 1992 is at least 120mph, and that's electronically governed, so I'm sure it has been designed to cruise at 100mph. It's a sports sedan! Also they're very high geared... At 100mph the engine is only doing about 3000-odd rpm if I recall correctly - barely breaking sweat.

Also, don't forget Bonnevilles were sold in Europe including Germany. Mine was sold new in Germany where it was used as a company car, so I'm sure it spent many hours and many days pounding the Autobahns at 100mph+.

I've sustained some fairly high speeds in mine more recently, albeit for short distances (sorry officer!), and she's now 20 years old. In England you see people flying along at 90mph plus in little Ford Fiestas and Vauxhall Corsas, and they don't seem to suffer any ill effects from it, and these are cars with small engines that really aren't designed for prolonged high speed driving.

To be completely honest, you make an awesome point!

Doesn't make me want to subject my low miles motors to it, this is the type of thing I would reserve for rented or purpose bought cars.

100 MPH for a mile is a whole different ball game than 100 MPH for 90 miles, in 100°F+ heat. That race is an engine/trans killer.

Then don't participate in it.

I would absolutely participate in it in my own car.

Less confident in the Bonnie though.

I respectfully disagree. I'm sure my car did many hundreds of miles at 100mph while it was in Germany. Not sure what effect the heat would have though, as I'm sure it never gets that hot in Germany, but the cooling systems on our cars must be pretty good. I'm certain our cars are designed to cruise at 100mph.

I'd also argue that cruising for miles at 100mph with the engine running at 3000-3500rpm with the transmission in its high overdrive top gear is a lot less wearing on the engine and transmission than stop-start city driving on congested urban streets.

As long as the car in question is well maintained I see no problem.

FLy into Vegas and go to Dream Cars off the strip and Tropicana. You can rent a Ferreri for $700 for the day and go balls out. Or a new Vette for about $300 for the day. They have tons of high end and exoctic rentals.

100mph all day?

This is only getting into the Northstar's true element

I took my '92 SSEi to 100mph very briefly at the weekend just to see how many rpm the engine was at.... 2500rpm at 100mph! That's nothing! Even less than I first thought! They're built for it, I tell ye!

Effortless acceleration up to that speed too. I was using very little throttle input - thus putting next to no strain on the transmission - and it got there in no time at all.

I'm Heading to Detroit tonight to watch the Sugar Bowl (GO BLUE!!!!!!!!) and there is a safe stretch of X-Way on the way there. I will hit 120 or so and post my RPM's and how well it gets there. I've had my car there pleanty of times before but didnt really pay attention to how well it handled it. Plus this is a newer motor with only about 90k on it.
