IMO, I'd go for an '03 SSEi or and 04/05 GXP with less than 100k.

Your price of less than 10k should be more than enough to get you a very nice car.

Harofreak00 (Browerville MN) has a nice 02 SSEi with decent miles, priced well under $10k, more like $6k.

I also fell for the under 10k MILES thing. lol
For 10k DOLLARS you should easily score an SSEi in good condition.
As Ed mentioned. Talk to Haro!

X3 on the mileage thing...I think we're all losing it today...I lost it so long ago, I feel like I never had it!
What is "it" again? 10G should be no problem at all! I found TWO 44k mile 01 SSEi's for 8k(mine) and 10k(almost bought) :btruestory:

More specifically, the headache of maintenance on a Northstar especially if you are a DIY'er  They are a complicated and convoluted motor. The only reason I bought mine was because someone else took the trouble to rebuild it to actually be reliable.

That said, I still prefer the LD8 to any L67 I've ever driven. The pain is worth the pleasure :)

I have to ask....how did someone re-build the motor to be more reliable?

All new gaskets top to bottom, and purpose-designed studs in the block. Add to that brand new heads and intake. 28,000 miles on this setup and going strong.

It's not necessarily the engine itself. While it has it's specific quirks, just like the 3800 has it's own, it is an easy engine to R&R stuff on for the most part. The problem is, it's a size 10 engine in a size 5 dress. All the sudden, that relatively easy R&R modular design of stuff is no longer easily servicable. Not to mention, they're more prone to needing constant attention once the 100k threshold is near on the clock.

FWIW, I still love the engine itself, otherwise, I wouldn't have purchased another vehicle with one. Just that in a FWD layout, it isn't a service friendly engine.
