Preventing Gas Tank Rust, edited with pictures

I read up on putting silicone into the area where the gas cap is located. Im a little confused on where exactly i should be focusing the

silicone. Pics would be helpful if its not too much trouble. Thanks again

mine is starting to show signs of the same thing.

I was going to mask off the tank filler neck, strip is all down to bare metal (air craft stripper)

The water soaks the foam like deadener behind the quarter panel, it never completely dries out. Do a search for it, harofreak00 took a panel off to show everyone, he made a thread about it.

It's less like foam and more like plaster of paris or something, lol. It does absorb water, but it's not soft, and there's no way to remove it..

Take the black screws off on the inside of the trunk holding the carpet on the side. Pull it back and shine a flashlight in there and you will see the foam stuff adhering the filler area to the fender. Mine came out of the blue last fall from little pin sized dots in the paint, and grew to full blown quarter sized spots in a matter of a couple months. I looked in from the trunk, and the entire area is rusted on the back side. So far the paint is holding up, it has just bubbled.

Could someone edit one of this pictures to show where to put the silicone, from what i read it should be the left side of the gas tanks area??



and as you can see i put down some silicone already, just wanted to know if i did it right and put it in the right spot.

Reach your finger inside to the bottom left. There is a gap between the outer sheet metal of the quarter panel, and that inner fill area.

It might not be necessary since you covered the weep hole. The assumption is that water is kicked up through that hole from the tire, and then gathers in that gap on the left and sits there and/or migrates into the adhesive on that is used to glue the inner filler area to the quarter panel. Remove the fasteners inside the trunk for the carpet on the driver's side, pull back the carpet, and you can see the filler area and the adhesive. And you'll be able to see if it's started rusting.

After looking at your pictures, my only advice to you would be to seal the weep hole that is directly under the filler neck (see picture below) if you haven't done this already. This is where the dirt, water, salt, etc. enter.

I thought I wanted the water to drain out throught there. Props to GM on the fantastic design.
