Hey I have a buddy who is looking to buy a grand prix. looking at the newer style with the 3800. He was wondering if there is certain years to avoid. He is a mechanic so don't hold back on any of the "lingo". I was just going to send him a link to this thread. So please please post away! And thank you in advance for your input!

When you say "newer" do you mean "newest"? ie 04-08?
I have a 2004 GTP CompG and I had no real major mechanical issues saves a few wear and tear items. I think the worst was a problem with my block heater that caused sudden coolant evacuation, but I pulled over before any overheating happened. I had an MAF fail once. Other then that, brakes, plugs, filters etc at reg. intervals.
The 2004+ GP is a pretty stout little car and I think is much better then the previous 97-03 version.

My '06 has been relatively trouble-free the past 3 years I've owned it. AC compressor crapped out at about 85k, and the intermediate steering shaft will be something to look into (all W-bodies will go through the factory one sometime in their lifespan, maybe even their replacement too). Mine acted up, but I just shot it full of high-temp grease and it's been doing ok ever since. The one on the SS got replaced under warranty.
Rear camber can be an issue too. It's been fine on the Grand Prix, but the Impala SS likes to slowly perform the splits over the course of 20k miles or so.
And I agree with Jim...it might have a love it or leave it look, but build quality and handling were much improved.

If it's a 97-03 the biggest things will be the trans might need some attention (Solenoids) and he'll definitely want to check out the LIM gaskets and Upper Plenum. Information is in Techinfo > Mechanical > VIN K Upper Intake Information.
