Fuel pump gone bad?

No problems from car - suddenly went out to leave (Came home from work earlier with no problems) tried to crank and it stalled, kept trying and it continued to stall. Acts like it is starving for fuel. Hubby looked at it = believes it is the fuel pump. Someone else tells me this is not common= switched relays to see if that made a difference, no difference. Just wont stay cranked unless pedal to the floor, and backfires.

My fuel sensor has been kaput for several months - wondering if it fuel pump = $271.99 at Oreillys is a lot of money if that is not the problem, bu then maybe the fuel sensor was just the start of more trouble??

Any input from anyone?

UPDATE_ fuel pump replaced yesterday - no change., Apparently relay is overheating - water under mat in FRONT of car - anyone have similar problem????

If it cranks but wont start, then remove your throttle body and see if the upper intake is filled with coolant. My car just did this last week. Is it a non-supercharged engine?
