Tearing into the Chicken more today. Last night we found that the #6 intake valve spring broke.

Today's pictures:

What's this

Looks like aluminum

SC rotors

It appears that the valve took out the piston and then the chunks got sucked or blown back into the LIM and onto the SC rotors. Not looking good right now, but I will know more when the SC is disected at a later date. As for now I am going to continue on to see what is left of the block and internals.

You just violated your ZiLLAmotorsports Supercharger warranty! If the housing and bearings are ok, you only need a beater replacement to steal the rotors from.

Let's pray for the rod, cap, and crank to be ok, and the camshaft as well. The money is in that housing (new bearings, coating, porting/polishing), so if it's ok, or only very minor scoring, this isn't really bad news!

Hmmm, oddly similar.

Stock springs with a cam, just like I had.

Wow, that's one broken engine. That's putting "pay to play" mildly.

OMFG that's fugly!!!!

:bluetwitch:

I drove by a lot yesterday that had a nice looking 2009 CTS-V for $58K :poke:

J/K.....You have the skills to tear it down to bare and build it back up again.

More progress. A little info as we go along.

This is nothing new, just a work in progress:

Image

Here are a few pictures to help people understand where the "backwards Bolt" is that people have a hard time getting to or forget about when pulling the motor.

You can see the handle of my ratchet sticking up by the transmission dipstick tube.

Engine on the stand. It is not stranger to this.

Head carnage:

And for the grand finale! What do you feed chickens besides valves, is it pistons or rods?

Thank goodness it didn't poke a hole in the block. Very nice looking LIM. Wish the LIM on an L27 looked that good! - BC

Where's the rest of the shrapnel from the exploded piston?

In the oil pan. That is coming off today.

From his description to me, there are marks and knicks on the cylinder walls, so it looks like it might be back to the old S2 block, not this L32. Here's an older picture of when that motor failed, showing the cylinder wall damage from the rod breaking is well below the skirt area of the piston:
Image

That LIM looks good? Here's why.......
Image
Yes, that's my parts washer.

Image
That's a custom laser-cut LIM bypass gasket that went with it.

Including coolant bypass plugs.

Rebuilding, porting, and polishing:
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=19647&hilit=superch ... t&start=80 (and the following pages)

Now you see why we're praying the supercharger housing is ok, and maybe only the rotors took the damage. I was working on the top end while Matt did the bottom end after the last boom.
Considering he has a good spare block, if the rods are ok (they're L32), he only needs a piston, valve, spring, and cylinder head, possibly a set of rotors.

What do you think failed first... the piston, or valvespring?

I have never seen a piston disintegrate like that, wow.

Great pics of the hidden bolt, I'm about to tackle my first 3800 removal, and had no idea where that one was located.

Just an FYI, the backwards bolt is only removable like that when the exhaust manifold is removed. You can access it with a 18mm socket on a bunch of extensions (2 feet or more) from the passenger wheel well.

Thanks for adding that Andrew. I was just trying to show people where it was when they go looking. Was not thinking most people tackle it with the manifold in place.

The trick to getting it back into place with the manifold in place during reinstall is to glue the bolt into the block with RTV the night before. When you mate the motor to the trans, the bolt will remain in the right place for the long extension trick.

But the way Matt is doing it is my preference. You can see it and get to it that way.

Ugh those pictures bring back memories from when I lost the #6 rod in my 99 SSEi shortly after getting it. The carnage in the oil pan was amazing, and what was left of the piston was wedged in the cylinder. When I disassembled the block, I found a large chunk that broke away from the lower corner.

I agree with removing the backwards bolt. I tried using the extensions, but found that it was easier to move the header out of the way (it was already disconnected)
