So I've been thinking about this for a while, and am getting around to it finally. There have been a few ppl who wanted some additions to the Maintenance List, and I wanted to change a few things, so I'm looking for more input, since this is for you guys. What else do you want to see in the Maintenance List? Please be as specific as possible.

Here's the list as of 6:13 PM Jan 30th (made a few tweaks already):

  • 1987-2005 Bonneville / Buick 3800 Maintenance List

Run Seafoam, Chevron Techron or Gumout Regane through gasoline every 5,000 miles.

Grease: Ball Joints, Tie Rods Every 8-10k ( Green Grease or Amsoil Grease recommended)
Air Filter Every 15k (Amsoil EaA, Purolator PureONE)
    PCV Valve Every 30k
MAF Sensor Element Cleaning/TB Cleaning Every 50k viewtopic.php?f=48&t=1661
Fuel Filter Every 15-25k (Purolator, AC Delco, WIX) http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... 45&t=23215
Spark Plugs Every 30-50k (NGK TR55 or Autolite 605) (Never Bosch)
Ignition Wires Every 30-50k (Napa Belden, AC Delco, Autolite Pro, NGK) (Never Taylor or Bosch)
Oil & Filter Every 5-6k or Every 6 months (Valvoline, Pennzoil Platinum or Amsoil)(Mobil1, Purolator PureONE, Amsoil EaO, K&N or WIX) (Never Fram) viewtopic.php?f=45&t=214
*Conventional Oil Every 3k/3 months(Pennzoil with a WIX (Napa), Delco or Purolator filter)
    Tire Rotation Every 6-8,000 Miles
Transmission Flush or Pan Drop Every 15-20k (Always make sure filter is changed when flushed) viewtopic.php?f=45&t=10193
Cooling System Flush Every 25-50k or 3-5 Years (Peak or Prestone Mixes-With-Any Coolant Only) (Never Dexcool)
Oxygen Sensor Every 80-100k (30k for non-heated) (AC Delco or Denso) (Absolutely never Bosch) viewtopic.php?f=48&t=794
Accessory Belt Inspect every 15k, replace every 100k, or as needed
Cabin Air Filter Inspect and Replace every 15k, or as needed in dusty conditions. (Note: 00+ Only) viewtopic.php?f=45&t=13626
Evap Core Cleaning Whenever Needed (Note: 99 and older only) viewtopic.php?f=45&t=2432
Brake Fluid Flush Every 75-100k, or 5 years
Power Steering Fluid Replacement/Flush Every 100k or 5 years

    *Special Considerations*
    All 3800s, LG3, LN3, L27, L36, L26, L67 & L32, especially important on vehicles factory installed with orange Havoline Dexcool Antifreeze/Coolant: http://www.dex-cool.net/
Lower Intake Manifold Gasket Replacement, every 80-100k (ignorance of this can allow coolant to enter your engine oil, this happening can cause irreversible lower engine damage, requiring replacement of subject engine)

    Series II, Naturally Aspirated, RPO:L36:
Upper Intake Manifold Plenum Replacement, Every 80-100k (ignorance of this can allow coolant to enter your intake manifold, possible damage to occur can be hydrolock, irreversible damage to emissions devices, misfires, etc. Most times, engine replacement is required if ignored long enough.) viewtopic.php?f=53&t=1061

    Series I, II, III RPO Code L67 & L32:
Change Supercharger Oil; Every 30-50k. (Intense Racing or GM Dealer) viewtopic.php?f=56&t=1690
Supercharger Belt; Inspect Every 15k, Replace Every 100k or as needed.

You need to remove the LG3, LN3 and L27 with aluminum upper intake from this list. These do not have the gasket issues and there needs to be a mention of 2 areas of failure on these, the LIM gaskets and the EGR passage.

Here is my recommendation for this:

All L36, L26, L67 & L32, especially important on vehicles factory installed with orange Havoline Dexcool Antifreeze/Coolant: http://www.dex-cool.net/
Lower Intake Manifold Gasket Replacement, every 80-100k (ignorance of this can allow coolant to enter your engine oil, this happening can cause irreversible lower engine damage, requiring replacement of subject engine)

Vehicles equipped with the plastic UIM should have the manifold replaced on the same interval as the gaskets. (Except the early designed L27 plastic UIM) We recommend using a replacement designed with the reduced diameter stove pipe due to the EGR passage failure.

Matt, the All 3800's bit is just about the LIM, and the bit below it just covers the L36. I think we have that covered. Please tell me if I'm reading your post wrong.

Conventional Oil Every 3k/3 months(Pennzoil with a WIX (Napa), Delco or Purolator filter)

Recommendation:

Conventional Oil Every 3k/3 months (API Grade SN or SM with a WIX (Napa), Delco or Purolator filter)

Pennzoil isn't available everywhere, while API SN or SM oil is. Plus, by going with a current specification rather than a brand, it leaves the brand choice up to the user.

IMO, the synthetic oil recommendation should include an addendum of "marked "full synthetic"" or something so somebody isn't misled by a synthetic blend.

The way it is worded to me is that all the engines you have listed have the LIM and dex issues. The LG3 and LN3 do not have the LIM / UIM set-up. They are a 1 piece aluminum intake manifold. The L27 started out with the aluminum UIM and aluminum LIM and then went to the plastic UIM. The L27 then changed to the current style plastic UIM.

So, only the 95+ had the dex / gasket issues and the later L27 (current design UIM) have the EGR issue.

There have been many times I have seen on here that people have the non-dex and are worried about the LIM gaskets when their bigger concern should be the EGR issue. Granted we recommend doing the LIM gaskets anytime the UIM is off.

And with that, we do not want someone with an LN3 looking for a leaky LIM gasket due to dex.

MAP/AMRA recommends DOT3 brake fluid to be replaced as needed if a fluid test determines the fluid contains over 200ppm of copper, which generally is every 2 years, 24k miles, which is a good interval to prevent moisture from contaminating the brake system.

An interval of 75-100k/5 years would certainly allow sludge to build up in the calipers and wheel cylinders. The sludge that develops at these low points isn't generally able to be flushed out once it's developed...and requires rebuild/replace of the caliper/wheel cylinder to completely deem the system clear of moisture/sludge

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Matt, I appreciate your input, but I am not familiar with the LG3, etc. EGR issues, and not comfortable putting it in here w/o knowing more. If you could point me to a thread, that'd be great, otherwise it can be addressed on a case-by-case basis, as the members with those cars are few and thinning by the day.

That is my point, the LG3, LN3 and early L27 do not have the EGR or LIM gasket issues

Jrs3800 wrote:The most common mode of failure for the Rochester/Delphi upper intake is degradation around the EGR port; the upper intake actually touches the EGR Stovepipe. Over time, the heat from the EGR Stovepipe slowly degrades the plastic to the point where it’s almost ash; the problem here is that coolant flows through this area to the throttle body. When enough of the plastic has degraded and the cooling system is under pressure, the upper intake can leak or rupture resulting in coolant being pumped into the intake, in turn being ingested into the cylinders, resulting in a very whitish smoke being emitted from the exhaust. It is also possible for the engine to become hydrolocked. This usually happens when the motor is turned off and the cooling system is under pressure. And at the time, if you were to check the coolant overflow tank or the radiator, chances are that you will find one or both of these to be very low.

Ohhhhh, I thought you meant they had a separate EGR issue. I see now.
