Door hinges
Anybody have any experience or knowledge on replacing door hinges that are welded in? I replaced the pins and bushings in my Suburban doors and found that the bushings were worn through and made the holes oval. With oval holes, I still have saggy doors and would like to get it fixed before it damages the striker and latch.
I know I can get new hinges that are bolted in, but what is the proceedure for removing the old ones that are welded? Would I be better off having a body shop doing it?

Re: Door hinges
Are they welded or is it an adhesive? On my Dad's 99 Blazer, Dealer told him the hinges were applied with an adhesive. I can ask him what the quote was to replace them, he never had the work done since he considered all the other issues it had and traded it in.

Re: Door hinges
Matt, I have the exact same issue with my Silverado. I took it to a local body shop and they told me that they had to be cut off and the new ones welded in place. He said they don't make a rebuild kit that actually works. They're out there, but they're not work a crap. He said he'd swap mine out on the driver's door for $100 if I bought the new hinges. Just haven't gotten around to doing it yet.

Re: Door hinges
I have found them at GMpartsdirect and they have them, but not as a complete hinge. They are sold in parts as in door side or body side.
Rockauto has the Dormans that bolt in and come with both pieces. They do look cheap compared to what is already on the truck. That and their complete hinge is only half the price of the half hinge from GMpartsdirect.
This is something I want done right and I want to make sure it lasts. I might have to take a closer look and maybe only have to buy half the hinges and new pins and bushings.

Re: Door hinges
Well my friends sisters 98 chevy silverado had that same problem, the holes were stretched out. What they did was welded the hole, and then drilled it out to fit the bushing. I thought it was pretty crafty, it works great. The door shuts with no problems

The wife is already complaining it is too high to get into, and I haven't even done a lift on it yet.

My mom constantly complains about our Duramax, too high, hard to park, etc. I tell her I have no issues with it, lol.

Re: Door hinges
If it was mine, i would first try welding up the holes and then re-drilling for the bushings before torching the hinges off the body. Might be hard to get a drill lined up though?

Re: Door hinges
A 90° drill should work. But is it really necessary if only the bushing is worn? Welding or bolting new hinges on is a tricky craft. If you miss location by a tiny bit, your door won't line up. Are the bushings brass/bronze?

Re: Door hinges
The previous owner let the bushing wear all the wat through and they caused the pin to rub on the steel. The holes are oblong now on both doors and allow the door to sag. The new bushings I put in rotate with the pins instead of allowing the pin to rotate inside of them.
At this point, I am thinking of taking it to a body shop and see what they say.
