Hmmm.... What leads you to believe the piston rings need replaced? Failure of these on a 3800 is kind of a rarity.

By the time you remove everything, have the block cleaned, checked and machined, you'll have more in it than a junkyard L67 or L32 and have your mechanic (or yourself) swapped in.

If you are getting into that deep, bore it out, new pistons, etc. Might as well make it bigger.

Just swap in a new/used longblock. Lot less work/hassle/cost.

Just went throught a similar dilema with my l36. It had one spun bearing and I figured that replacing the bearings would be enough on a motor with 86k miles.

Here is what ended up happening:

Bored .020 over
New rings, pistons
polished crank
milled heads
s1x cam
on
and
on

its almost too inviting to go further anytime the engine must come apart.
I would look for a good solid used engine with well known history...not the typical power washed engine from a junk yard with "50k" miles. A smashed up car with a well maintained engine (for sale by owner) might be a deal too hard to pass up.

If I reading correctly, OPs car hit a deer and he is gonna swap his engine into the one he might buy.
