Generally in the area of 6 to 7 quarts... Depends on how much you get out really.. I have used 5.75 to 6 easily, but I always buy 7..

Yep, about 6 or 7 quarts is what we said in the Techinfo Article Drop & Clean Trans Pan

Speaking in Canuckeese I just did my tranny and the fluid capacity book we use says the capacity was 5.7 litres but it took more like 7 litres. That being said if you look at the dipstick when checking the level (in park, engine warm) you will see the cross hatching on the dip stick. Fill to the top line then add one more litre. This may sound excessive but in talking to a master technician he says that the markings on dipsticks are generally at the minimum requirements the tranny needs. Adding one extra litre will not hurt and will actually make the tranny run smoother. GM's are notorious for this

I've heard add a pint, but not a full liter. Too much can cause foaming and other damage, especially in non- FWD transmissions.

I'm running half a quart over full right now. No issues. I also ran a quart over full for ~30k miles with zero issues.

Great, I'll buy 7 liters of Dex 6. It's almost $7 a liter!

I don't like the puddling that the Grizz is leaving in this nice underground heated garage. :angry7:

I know the level is low and from the colour on the dipstick needs to be done this weekend.

Thanks guys.

1 litre extra is not going to harm the tranny. There is no foam issue. I am only speaking of the 4t60-E transmissions here. And Silverbullet....Why are you going to add Dex 6 to your transmission when its not necessary. I have only seen it needed in post 2006 GM cars and trucks. ATF3 will work just as well in your 2000.

Its for the 94... and the Dex 6 has a better additive package no matter how you slice it up... I use it in all of my transmissions these days...

Like Don said, the Dex-VI has a much better additive package. It also has much better base oils than Dex-III. The upside is much better protection and flow when it's cold, and better protection when it's hot. Plus it's compatible with all previous Dexron specs.

I never received any tech info at work about Dex6. I know that we have it in a 5litre Mobil1 container. I just assumed it was overkill in a tranny that was taking ATF3

Would the fact that not all of the Dex III is drained out when doing a pan drop be a concern when you replace it with Dex-VI? Or are they compatible enough to intermingle?

They're compatible, AFAIK.

Perfectly compatible.

They only had three litres in stock so I had to go back after work to pick up all 7 with the filter. $75. with tax.
It would cost a lot more if I brought it into a shop to have done with regular Dex.

Darn, it's going to rain all weekend. I hate working in the rain.
