Interchangeable Sunroof?

I have an '01 SLE with a sunroof that stopped working. :bluetwitch:

I did a search using the "Wrecked Parts Locator" on the links page and it found some Bonneville sunroofs, but it also showed sunroofs from Caddy Sevilles & De Villes, Saturn Vues, Chevy Equinox, Olds Aurora & Pontiac Torrent.

Do they all use the same roof that would fit in my '01 Bonne?

First of all, what part of the sunroof is not working? Does the motor try to engage at all?

As far as interchanging with all those other cars, I doubt it. However, I probably have the parts you need, so lets figure out whats wrong first.

It's been several months since I last used the roof, but when I did; I tried closing it, it got about half way and was struggling, I noticed the glass was a little crooked in the frame.
While pressing the button, I pushed it closed by hand.

I briefly pushed the button to open it, but it didn't do much and I didn't want to risk getting it stuck open. I could hear the motor running so I think it still works.

I haven't torn anything apart yet, but I'm guessing the tracks or a cable or worm gear is messed up?

First try removing the glass and see how it reacts. There are 4 torx bolts holding it in.

If the motor is still having a hard time moving the track, there is probably something wrong with the track assembly. Its not really a serviceable item. Unfortunately, I do not have a sunroof assembly right now, just motors.

Will I have to drop the headliner to remove the glass?

Nope. You should be able to see the bolts just sitting in the driver side, stick your head up next to the glass.

Update-

A few days back I dropped $75 at a local junkyard for a sunroof assembly that seemed to be in decent shape. Got it home, cleaned it up and lubed the tracks so the glass moves back n forth pretty easily.

I'm halfway thru installing it in the car and got to the point where I could test it. Hit the button, it slid all the way open BEAUTIFUL!

BUT WAIT!! I click the button forward and it slides half way closed and stops! :angry4: I open it and close it again. Same thing, it stops half way closed. ??? When it stops, it does a little back n forth movement like it thinks its at the end of the track. I checked the track, there's nothin blocking it. What gives?

I'm sooooo cloooose!

UPDATE TO MY UPDATE-

I removed the motor, then slid the sunroof closed by hand, then reinstalled the motor. Works like a charm!! :beerchug:

Just have to get the headliner, sunvisors, etc. back up & it'll be a SUCCESS!

I had a similar problem when I replaced mine also. It needs to be installed correctly.
  • 1. Connect the electrical connectors (3) to the sunroof motor (1). Do not install the sunroof motor at this time.
    2. If installing a new replacement sunroof motor proceed to step 3. Hold the sunroof switch in the closed position until the sunroof motor stops. The sunroof electronics will automatically stop the sunroof motor at the fully closed and flush position.
    3. Manually close the sunroof glass panel if unable to close before sunroof motor removal.
    • A. Slide the sunroof glass panel forward.
B.Seat the rear of the glass panel by pushing upward at the rear of the glass panel.

    4. Install the sunroof motor (1) to the sunroof module (2).
    5. Install the fasteners in order to secure the sunroof motor to the sunroof module. Tighten
    6. Check the glass fit to the roof opening. Refer to Sunroof Window Height and Opening Fit Adjustment .
    7. Install the headliner. Refer to Headliner Replacement in Interior Trim.
