Sorry if this has been posted before, but this site has a great article on rebuilding the 3800 series engines, with pictures and descriptions of the differences over the years.

Yep saw that a long time ago.. It is great info.. Sheds a lot of light on all of the 3800's I have..
1995 was an odd year for the 3800...LOL

The engine that came out of my van was freakish... It was the old series I L27... First time I changed the oil i was confused.. It looked like a series II oil pan... Hmmmmm... Pulled the Drain plug and what do you know it was a series II drain plug... In research i found that the Vibration dampener for the 95 L27 was specific to 95... Thought that was odd.. Found the motor to be able to run through the revs quick... Engine didn't feel like it ran as heavy as the older L27's... I was perplexed for a while.. Then noticed this motor was listed with a 2170 or possible 743 crank.. Turns out if you have a 95 L27 there is a very good chance you have the light weight 2170 crank.. When I saw the article it was the last stitch of proof I needed..
Its just really interesting what GM did to be able to use the series I Blocks and build the series II blocks using quite a few of the same parts.. Making the 95 L 27 a freak year motor...

Great read. No doubt some invaluable information for series 2 and 3 motors. Not much info for pre 95 series 1's though. 95's and 94's were both transition platforms.

I don't know if that's true or not, but ok.
